I have travelled to Los Angeles many times on business and quite a few with my family for a holiday.We have always headed for A Motel/Hotel in the Anaheim Area {30 miles south of LA}
After a long flight from the UK I would recommend an overnight stop near Los Angeles airport for the first night [hotels from about 30 pound per room per night} this review is based on a family holiday 2 adults 2 children 8,15 so you will not find any real nighlife info here.
Travelling down to Anaheim is a doddle,finding your accomodation unless it is on the same road {Harbor Boulevard}
as Disneyland can be frustrating, get your hands on a good Anaheim Guide.
I will recommend the Candycane Inn next door to Disneyland
if you want to be close to the action,excellent Motel,large rooms,
good size pool and spa,plus a free comprehensive breakfast
Not bad for 95 dollars a night.{per room}
Anyway I digress Anaheim itself if it was'nt for Disney would not really be worth visiting as its just not a lot there.Don't misunderstand its all vey nice but apart from the Crystal Cathedral and good range of Californian shopping malls,there's not a lot else to see.
If your are in need of retail therapy I recommend the "Block at Orange Shopping Mall"
Good range of shops,restaurants also boasts many cinemas and an indoor skate park,but parking in the evening is difficult
a taxi from Disney probably cost 10 dollars.
Back to Disney,there are two amusement parks here now the world famous and in my opinion the best "Disneyland" and sharing the entrance with this park is Disney's California Adventure Park
which I prefer.
If you are visiting Southern Califorina for a couple of weeks I can
suggest buying a California citypass which entitles you to use the Disney Parks on 3 seperate occasions,1 day entrance to Nottsberry Farm Park {8 miles away}.and a visit ot San Diego Zoo or Adventure park.
This flexi-ticket really does offer big saving if these parks are on your "todo" list.
See following info for the citypass

CityPass is valid for 3-Day Disneyland® Resort Park Hopper. Not only do you get admission to both Disneyland® Park and Disney's California Adventure™ Park for 3-days over a consecutive 14-day period, but you can go back and forth between the two parks on the same day of admission.
CityPass is valid for General Admission to Knott's Theme Park. Ticket is valid any day the park is open to the public and regular tickets are on sale. Ticket is not valid for special ticket events. Cannot be combined with any other offers or discounts. Please present ticket at Main Gate turnstiles.
CityPass is valid for one SeaWorld San Diego Adventure Park General Admission visit. Not valid for use with other discounts or special events. Non-transferable, non-refundable and not for resale.
CityPass is valid for Deluxe San Diego Zoo admission package including Bus Tour and SkyFari Ride. Discount not valid with any other offers, special events or Membership. Parking not included.
Free Companion Fare Coupon on Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. (1 free companion ticket with one purchase)
Seaport Village San Diego, free homemade fudge and discount shopping and dining pass at 75 shops and restaurants.
South Coast Plaza V.I.P. Passport contains premiums and gifts from over 160 stores and restaurants
CityPass delivers six days of unforgettable fun and adventure at a savings of $73.95 (adults) or $56.70 (children) with 14 days to take it all in.

It really is a good saving as long as you plan you trip within the 14 day limit of the pass.

Anyway back to Anaheim,The focal point is as you guessed it
disney,Of course the closer your accomodation is to Disneyland the more expensive it is,However savings can be made for instance those motels/hotels further away from Disney may offer FREE transportation to and from the park which can be a saving
as diney parking is not cheap.
Also some hotels/motels offer free breakfast but this consists mostly of just coffee and a doughtnut.,look for those who offer a comprehensive buffet breakfast,these can be really good and set you up for the day.
After a long day in the parks we tend to head back to the hotel for an early evening swim before changing ready to go out and have a meal.
Anaheim is full of restaurants from fast food to five star eateries.
We are very casual about where we eat so try different things everynight,but I must say I am partial to Mexican food and I am spoiled for choice here.
On average a meal for a family of 4 say in a restaurant similar to TGI's would cost betwee 50 - 60 dollars which also include a bottle of wine..
I hope you find this review useful,and If I can recall anymore info
I will update it
