Introducing the Mighty Angkor Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located close to Siem Reap in Cambodia and we were lucky enough to visit earlier this year. The city of temples combines together to make it the largest religious site in the world and you can see why even before you get there; any map of the 400 square kilometre site will give you a sense of the importance and significance of the place. Apparently it was home to over one million people back when London was city of only 10,000 people. The site fulfils a number of criteria that give it the UNESCO status, but mainly it is the ... more

Advantages Advantages Stunning architecture, few tourists, cheap and with amazingly friendly locals.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It is one hell of a pain to get there, it's hot and dusty

My partner and I spent about three weeks in Cambodia during a trip overland from Bangkok to Bejing in early 2003. I was worried about going to Cambodia and I only went because my boyfriend really wanted to go.... I was scared of landmines and of a country so recently torn apart by communism, war and disruption...... How wrong was I...... Although you need to be cautious in some parts of Cambodia, particularly the Capital at night and as long as you arn't going to be stupid enough to stray from the main roads into the active land mine areas then you will be fine. The people of Cambodia are the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Stunning, beautiful, breathtaking.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Running the risk of getting templed-out

My friend Kath and I spent a fantastic holiday in Thailand and Cambodia in 2002. Having spent a week or so in Koh Chang (Thailand), we went to visit my cousin who lives in Phomn Penh, and from there we explored the amazing wonder of the world that is Angkor. I dug out my journal recently, and thought I'd give you some highlights: So, if you'd like to step this way, we'll explore Angkor..... Cambodia is situated between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. We flew from Bangkok to Phomn Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and had planned on taking a boat trip up the Tonle Sap to get to Siem Reap (Northwestern ... more

Advantages Advantages The most beautiful place on earth.

Disadvantages Disadvantages I cant travel to Asia every day.

Angkor was once a city that was the heart of the Khmer empire that stretched from China to the Bay of Bengal. Although it is mainly ruins it is still the most impressive sight I have ever seen. The 3 day pass costs $40 with a one day pass costing $20. I would recommend getting the three day pass. It is best to stay in Siam Reap for $15 a night for a nice twin with air-con and fan. You could stay nearer but the top class hotels will cost you dearly and are no nearer. You can hire a local bike rider to take you their for $5 or hire a car if there’s more than one of you for the day. They ... more
