Very moving museum

Advantages: Very moving, not too pricey
Disadvantages: No disabled access, not a huge amount of exibits

I visited Anne Frank's House on a visit to Amsterdam last week. 6 of us went on the trip and the only thing that we all agreed we wanted to see was Anne Frank's House. I wanted to see it, as being a historian this was one of the most important sites in the city. Others had read the book or even just heard Anne mentioned in passing. The thing was that everyone knew something about the story of Anne, which is pretty remarkable in itself, that a small ...
...but here's a reminder. Anne was a Jew, living with her father, mother and sister in Amsterdam. She was born in 1929 in Germany. When the Nazi party came to power the Frank family decided that Germany was no longer safe and they moved to Amsterdam. They thought they were safe, until 1940 when the German army invaded the Netherlands.

The Diary itself was begun before the family went into hiding. Anne received it for her 13th birthday ... more

A House with History

Advantages: A great musuem for all ages - much more than just a collection of objects
Disadvantages: Not fully accessible to wheel chair users or people with limited mobilty

...that I should visit the Anne Frank House, partly because it ws raining heavily and it was obvious that it was time to do some indoor activities and partly because I had visited Auschwitz earlier in the year and am very interested in this period of history. Background ------------------ Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929. In 1933, Otto Frank and his wife, Edith, decided to leave Germany with Anne and their older daughter, Margot, to make a ...
...The Museum -------------------- The Anne Frank House is situated in central Amsterdam on the Prinsengracht, just a stone's throw from the Westerkerk (west church). We walked there - it's only twenty minutes from the central station - but it can be reached by taking trams number 13 or 17. You enter through the recently built modern visitors centre and as you go in there is a leaflet available in eight languages which will give you extra information ...

TRUELY MOVING

Advantages: Reminds us of how lucky we are
Disadvantages: If you do not go early you could be stuck in queues for a long time

...to visit was house where Anne Frank lived or Anne Frankhuis. This is easily found either by canal boat or on foot at Prinsengrancht 263. Entrance was 12 Guilders - whis is about £4.50 - not too bad. The building dates back to 1635 and it shows the rooms where the yound Jewish girl along with family and friends hid during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam from 1942 until 1944. I would advise that you get here early. We arrived on a Wednesday morning ...
...is sad to think that Anne and her sister Margot died in Bergen-Belsen in 1945 - one week before liberation by the allied forces. Her diary is her legacy, and was published by her father Otto Frank the only survivor. I would recommend a visit to this place - it is surrounded by an air of quiet contemplation and respect, everyone is lost in thought - trying hard to imagine the hardship of living in such a manner. The Anne Frank House

Advantages: a very moving learning experience
Disadvantages: long queues of people

The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, was the foremost in my mind, when I visited Amsterdam. The place I had wanted to visit for over thirty years. Ever since I had first read "The Diary of Anne Frank". It is hard to imagine this quiet canalside street, echoing with the clatter of jackboots on the cobblestones, and the harsh, guttural commands as Dutch Jews were herded from their homes and onto trucks bound for who knew where? The tree-lined ...
...And then to remember that Anne was one person of millions. Not just Jews, but Romany gypsies, the mentally ill, and any other deemed undesirable in that awful time. Had she lived, how great might her talent have become? And, taking hers as the story of just one, how can we ever begin to imagine the immense talents in all walks of life, that were lost forever during this period? The Anne Frank House now owns the building next door, which was being ...

Het Achterhuis

Advantages: Fulfilled a dream of Mine
Disadvantages: Claustrophobic, eerie atmosphere

...the house behind - what Anne Frank had planned to call her book she was in the process of writing when her life was cruelly cut short. Anne Frank was a Jew who kept a diary during war town Amsterdam. She was in hiding with her family, another family, and a dentist friend on the Princengract , the same building that was used for her father's jam making company. Today the house she hid in is a museum, a timely reminder of what happened to millions ...
...video of people close to Anne talking about her and her family. There are also signs on the walls, adverts for Anne's father's company and other memorabilia. Upon reaching the staircase, I finally understood why she mentioned in the diary that a cloth was nailed to the door. Up a flight of incredibly steep stairs, and you're into the house itself... I would like to describe in detail what the house was like, but I can't. It was small and cramped, ...

Read the diary and then visit the hiding place

Advantages: very moving, well-presented
Disadvantages: can get very busy, not accessible for people with walking difficulties

The Anne Frank House is well worth the visit if you are ever in Amsterdam. The house is Prinsengracht 263, and is easy to find as Amsterdam is very compact. Many of the boats touring Amsterdam's canals also stop off at the museum. Once inside the house you are shown a short video describing the anti-Jewish persecution of the Second World War, which led Anne, her family and four others to hide in the annexe of this remarkable building. Anne's father, ...
...stars on the wall in Anne Frank's room that she used to give it some character. Once you leave the annexe you can see Anne's original diary and an exhibition looking at the histroy of anti-Semitism. There is also a well-stocked museum shop. More than 500,000 people visit the Anne Frank House yearly, so it is often very busy with long queues to get in. My advice is to arrive early - the museum opens at 9am Monday-Saturday and 10am on Sundays. When ...

I love Hotel Nadia

Advantages: Great hotel staff, great team
Disadvantages: Can't think of any - maybe the steep staircases?

This is the best 2* hotel I have ever stayed in. All the staff are helpful and they gave me the world's warmest welcome to their hotel. We found the hotel on the internet and after reading a few review websites, we decided to try this hotel. They also have their own website which offers detailed information about the hotel, the location, rates etc. From the central station, take tram 13 or 17 to Westermarkt stop (3rd stop). It is Euro 1.60 one way and takes 3 minutes. Once you alight from the tram, walk backwards and the hotel is on your right. The hotel is less than 3 minutes' walk from Anne Frank's house and the Dam square is less than 5 minutes away. You can walk to most of the tourist attractions in Amsterdam from the hotel. To get in to the hotel, you need to buzz them. After getting in, don't be afraid of the steep ...

Sink It

Advantages: Close to station and a great city to explore
Disadvantages: Just about everything

. The booking company weren't to blame at all, the Botel overbooked rooms it seemed at will with the late arrivals the unlucky ones as we were. We found another hotel which was absolutely fantastic and we enjoyed the rest of our stay thoroughly. The double booking at the Botel turned out to be a blessing in a way. I would recommend Amsterdam to anyone. There's the infamous Red Light District, the Anne Frank House, canals aplenty, shops and squares and museums and an abundance of cafes, restaurants and pubs. We loved Amsterdam, it's people and enjoyed the weekend despite the Amstel Botel experience. I'm mainly writing this review to warn others about the Amstel Botel and the way they do business. The don't care about your custom, they want people through the doors, the more the merrier but most of all they want your cash. The worst hotel I ...

A Short Break in Amsterdam

Advantages: Easy and quick to get there, an interesting and cosmopolitan city.
Disadvantages: It clearly isn't for all given the abudance of blantant sex and drugs.

and a whole host of other knick-knacks including stuffed animals and foreign objects of interest. These are on display along with over 250 etchings, works which Rembrandt completed relatively early on in his career and which are relatively unknown. The highlight was a workshop we attended on the makings of these etchings, using all of his old, original equipment, although this massive and grandeur house is worth a look just in itself. Admission was EURO7.50 Anne Frank's House. Anne Frank's House, located on Prinsengracht, is essential part of any trip to Amsterdam. If you do want to go, then expect to wait in line, I had to queue for about an hour to get in and it was raining to top it off. The admission price is EURO7.50 for adults, which is reasonable and I'd say you should expect to spend a couple of hours here at the most. I ...
