I've studied in Antwerp for four years now, and in all that time, Antwerp hasn't lost its magic. I just keep dicovering great cosy places. This is what I think of Antwerp:
- history: Antwerp is a city that is full of buildings older than 750 years. Its historical centre is very warm and cosy. The heart of the city is the Cathedral and the Grand Place. From there on, everything is close at hand.
- shopping: fashion, Belgian chocolats, fine food, gifts, antique, it's all close to each other.
- people: tourist always say that people in Antwerp ar so fashionable, well... I think most of the times that's true.
- nightlife: you can trust me, you better sleep well before you come to Antwerp... Belgium is the country with the most bars per square mile, Antwerp is the city in Belgium with the most bars in one street. Apart from that there are pubs, restaurants (try the Belgian kitchen !), cinemas, the opera, dancings,... Belgium is the country of the traditional beers, the fries (no, it's not France), the waffles and the mussles.
- getting there: Deurne airport, next to Antwerp, or the Thalys trains, or by car via the E313.
- Antwerp is cheap when you are British or American: the Euro is low at the moment
- Antwerp is close to: Brussels (40 km), Amsterdam (two hours by train), Gent (where King Charles V lived)(50 km) 1 mile = 1.6 km
You want to hear some disadvantages ? Sometimes the wetter is realy bad, but if you come in August or Septembre, you have a good chance for sun. Traffic in Antwerp is a mess, by bike you will travell faster than by car. Stay in the centre of the city. Like in many cities, there are some places where you don't want to be at night.
But on the whole, I would say that Antwerp is a nice and cosy city in the heart of Europe.
