Flexing my Mussels in Antwerp
Advantages: If you want mussels there's plenty of choice at Bacino Disadvantages: Think twice about trying 5 different types
...sometimes tricky beasts. Bacino is located on the corner of a side street very close to Antwerp's beautiful cathedral and it's a rather traditional looking bar/restaurant in typical Belgian style. After checking that they definitely had mussels, we were taken to a table in the conservatory-style terrace area where several other tables were already taken. Our table was right next to a fearsome radiator that made it so physically uncomfortable that ... ...the kitchen scrubbing shells.
Bacino specialises in mussels; there are two whole pages of mussel options in their menu. Taking the route of least resistance Katya and I went for the simplest option of ordering their offer of mussels in five different sauces with fries to accompany. Alex chose a steak with mushroom sauce. For drinks I ordered a Framboise (the local raspberry flavoured beer - sharper and juicier than the better known Kriek which is ...

Wagamama Belgian Style
Advantages: Decent Japanese noodles Disadvantages: Same as the Wagamanas at home
...very much like any other Wagamama, with the expected long tables, which you end up sharing with lots of other groups of people, chopsticks which are default unless otherwise specified by yourself and slate flooring. Above were some purple strip lights which added some ambience.
The restaurant was pretty empty when I visited it mid afternoon on a Sunday. You have to take into account that for 3 out of 4 Sundays the shops are closed and this was one ... ...that it was empty; I can't imagine being a lone diner on a big bench crushed up against other groups having conversations can be much fun.
THE FOOD
The menu is pretty much identical to that you would expect in the UK with the usual mix of noodles, rice and ramen dishes as well as a couple of specials, sides and desserts. They even write the number of your order on the table like you always see at home.
I ordered steamed but got fried gyoza, ...

Whipped Cream & Watery Messes - Antwerp style
Advantages: Great food Disadvantages: No mussels
...town centre until we found Het Vermoeide Model where we checked the menu boards outside to confirm the presence of mussels and headed in. First Impressions
Entering the restaurant was like stepping back in time. The ground floor had a small room with bare brick walls, a complicated looking sink and beer tap to one side and a staircase heading to the first floor. The waitress asked if we wanted to eat upstairs or downstairs and since the downstairs ... ...and warmer first floor where we were offered a table tucked away in a smaller side-room. The waiter, a young tall floppy-haired fellow, brought us a bunch of menus; an original in Flemish with the prices and a translated menu with the food in several languages but no prices. Very cunning I thought. He took our orders for beers and cokes and left us to ponder our choices. Katya and I debated which of the three different types of mussels to go for ...

Wok This Way, Tok this Way
Advantages: Looks nice, bit of a novelly Disadvantages: Food really rather disappointing
...of a treat.
Wok Wok Wok, Wok A Way Beach
Nobody had booked anything since the two hosts of the meeting were not local and are at the level of seniority that means they don't ever have to think about practical things or other people's comfort. My boss said he'd eaten in what he described as an excellent 'Wok-place' on a previous visit and a colleague decided that she knew exactly where he met and rushed off to book a table. What he'd had in ... ...entirely different.
Between a Wok and a Hard Place
Wok A Way is a small Belgian chain of fast food oriental restaurants attempting to fill a niche of 'better than BurgerKing' but with aspirations to be a sort of local Wagamama. It's been running since 1999 and it's fair to say it's not exactly taken over the world and it hasn't got everything right yet based on our experience. There are a couple of Wok A Way outlets in Antwerp and the one we ...
