September 2003 having just married my Beautiful Wife Jan we took the Kids and Honeymooned in Corfu at the Corfu Plaza Apartments, St George South, located at the bottom of Corfu Island.
These apartments are special because... ...they are set in a secluded location among sand dunes, in a rural landscape leading to a nearby lake. Located alongside its sister hotel, with which it shares the same reception/check-in, the Corfu Plaza Apartments offer all the great Super-family features and you're bound to enjoy your family holiday here. Part of the package was a day at Aqualand which at the time was described as the largest water-park in Europe, consisting of 75,000 square metres of pure fun, with a huge choice of rides to suit all the family. The water for the attractions is transported straight from the Ionian Sea to the middle of Corfu just for your pleasure.
Two of these slides are so high, 18 metres and this is probably the nearest you will ever come to free falling without jumping out of a plane or off of a cliff or building, but more about them later.
The water-park is located in the centre of Corfu Island at Agios Loannis on the main road to Glyfada. On the Wednesday morning we packed our bathing costumes and made for the coach that would transport us to the park , we had no idea of the coach ride we were about to experience. We boarded the coach and settled in for the nice slow ride across Corfu, the doors closed and the engine started up and the coach set off as though we were in pole position of the formula one grand prix with Michael Schumaker behind the wheel, weaving and dodging in and out of traffic as though the brakes had failed and there was no way to stop. This kind of ride was OK by me but my wife and kids were somewhat scared and couldnt wait until the driver found the brakes. The beautiful landscape was zipping by and there were white knuckles everywhere but we made it in one piece and just accepted that this must be how they drive here.
It took about 40 minutes to reach Aqualand even at this speed, we eventually came to a stop and disembarked outside the entrance to the park, it was hot and sunny and the overwhelming sound of fun and laughter that was bellowing from behind the turnstiles soon made us forget about the unexpected theme-park coach ride we had just experienced. We entered the park and the site of so many water slides turned me into a child again and I couldn't wait to get started, right what are we going on first, I know lets start at the first slide and work our way around, MMM this was a feature called the Caribbean Pirate Adventure for small children, I don't care and headed for it, don't you dare said Jan, I am doing it for the kids and even without kids nothing was going to stop me from trying every single feature in the park.
Amongst the attractions there is a 180m family rafting slide, I managed to talk Jan into joining me and the kids and we grabbed the next available inflatable and took it to the top of the ride and boarded it. No wait Jan said what about my hair it will frizz and with our Dan at the back and me in front we pushed off, whoops too late darling and and set off like a rocket according to Jan(slight exaggeration), Jan could do nothing but let out little cries to start with and as we picked up speed the cries turned to a kind of confused laugh mixed with the desire to scream out loud, we reached the bottom of the slide and there was a 3ft drop into the pool, Yee-haa then splash straight under the water we went and the look on Jan's face when she surfaced was a picture to remember. Ten minutes later Jan had frizzed fine style so we went looking for something to tie back her frizz bomb and then went on it again.
Across the park we found the Black Hole Slide, a tunnel that was as black as a moon-less night with a LED strip running the length top to bottom giving a trailing effect as the lights lit up in turn, we stood outside listening to the screams and an assortment of different noises that people were making. what do you think, I said to Jan, no chance she said I am not going in there, I did manage to talk her into it and we grabbed an inflatable and headed for the top. With Jan at the back and me in front our Dan gave us a helping hand much to the protest of Jan we set off down the tunnel, the daylight disappeared and it was pitch black twisting and winding and at some points it seemed like we were going to turn upside down and at this point we both let out screams and shouts and laughs then before we new it we were once again dropping into the pool.
Some of the slides were not put together properly and at some points the effect was like having a cheese wire run up your back at 90 mph and people everywhere had red marks on them, some in strange places that made me wonder what they had been doing to get them.
There is a large variety of food and drink on site and it is all good quality and the queues were not that big either considering the amount of people that were there.
For the exhausted amongst us there is a large area for just relaxing and enjoying the sun and also a slow man made river that you can just sit on an inflatable and go round and round at your leisure.
The wave pool generates waves over 2 metres and does become quite packed but boy is this fun, two ways to enjoy the wave pool are just sit on your inflatable and do nothing or in a small way try and surf on one of the waves and see how far you can get but don't over do it or you will be told off by the pool attendants and this can be embarrassing.
Having tried all the attractions several times came the BIGGY, we all went to the free-fall slides and looking up I said to Dan what about it then, he replied no chance so I took myself off and headed for the top, once up there I looked down and Believe me it was a little bit daunting but hey what the heck lets just do it, so with my family at the bottom I launched myself onto the smallest and starting in a small tunnel I went over the bend and was in mid air, my body was rigid and I could not for the life in me stop myself from crying out all the way to the bottom and along the water-shoot, WOW what a buzz, I got to my feet and Jan said you are mad, ho do you think so and I set off again this time with the big one in mind and as I reached the top I decided that this time I was not going to look down and I once again launched myself onto the BIGGY, this one sort of took my breath away but still the cries could not be prevented and as I landed back on the slide and shot along the water-shoot I took a breath and swallowed a big part of the Ionian Sea. Coughing and spluttering I set off for the top as I was determined to conquer these slides and go down them without screaming and after several attempts I managed to do just that.
Come on Darling its time to go for the coach, I had one last attempt at getting our Dan on them but there was no chance of that, we headed for the coach back to the plaza and this time the journey was somewhat slower and we reached the plaza having all had a good day out.
The next morning I felt like I had done a 8 hour all out session at the gym and headed for the beach for a day of relaxation???
Well more about my day of relaxation in my next review of Corfu.
Advantages: Great day out for all the family Disadvantages: Lots of stairs to climb
...of over 2 metres which can get very busy at times, but it is still great fun.
While we was there we was told by our rep that you can actually stay at Aqualand as a set holiday. Not sure if this would get slightly boring after a week. ...

Advantages: Great Atmosphere! Disadvantages: Distance
This place is great!! Telis who works there is a great guy and will greet you warmingly. I've been there 4 times and I'm off again next August, the amount of people there amounts to a great atmosphere and a great time. The pool is large and there is a a mini market to buy food from. The only thing is that it is over a KM to the beach and at least 500m to the shops, however it near the Go-Karts =D
The apartments are large and spacious, also they are cleaned reguarly. The place is in the Rural area so it is quiet and is onlt 2 hours from the airport. Also visit AquaLand it is the greatest waterpark I have ever been to. ...
Advantages: gorgeous weather, plenty of things to do and see Disadvantages: Place I stayed was full of cockroaches, beaches are too full & not that nice, people trying to force you into their restaurant.
and so was the sea.

Advantages: Pretty scenery, some of the best beaches around Disadvantages: Not much else to do

4. Theme Parks. There are a couple of waterparks around such as Aqualand and Sioux City. We didn?t really fancy these, but those with families might.
5. Visiting some small towns such as Puerto Morgan which is described as little Venice, due to its network of canals and bridges. The houses here are beautifully decorated with flowers and there are nice independent stores and restaurants to browse around in. All in all quite charming.
6. Catch a show. A lot of restaurants on the beach front have entertainment such as dance acts or singers who perform while you eat. Some of these were actually quite good but others were quite bad. It doesn?t cost much as the restaurants only add around a 10% charge on your bill. There is also a show ...
