Arequipa - Peru's white city

Advantages: Architecture, beautiful city, culture
Disadvantages: Distance, altitude

Arequipa is a Peruvian city in the far south of the country that is nestled 2380m above sea level in the Andes, about a half a day drive from the coast. Known as the "White city", from its white stone buildings of unique architecture dating from the Spanish days, it has a very strong European feel. The city is Peru's second biggest city after Lima. We arrived here by bus from the coast which meant it gave us our initial experience of high ...
...===Juanita, the Ice Princess===
Arequipa is the current resting place of Juanita, the Inca Maiden and ice mummy. She was a young girl who lived during the Inca period around 560 years ago and who was selected as a sacrifice on behalf of her people, a ritual called capacocha. Child sacrifices occurred during important or difficult periods (e.g. crop failure) and were of the most perfect children. These children were fattened up before being ... more

Arequipa, the Colca Canyon & Cruz del Condor

Advantages: Impressive colonial buildings, Spectacular scenery
Disadvantages: Altitude problems, Chances of the occasional riot!

Arequipa is 2,350 metres above sea level and is dominated by the impressive El Misti volcano, whose peak towers over the city at 5,825 metres. Ancient eruptions of El Misti covered the area in pale volcanic tuff called sillar, from which most buildings are constructed, earning the city the title of "White City". The area is prone to earthquakes, the last big one being in 2001, when the cathedral and other city buildings were damaged. Our tour of ...
...that the historic centre of Arequipa was designated a World Heritage site in 2000. On the day of our visit there was a long line of riot police standing guard in front of the cathedral, shields at the ready! There were several groups around the square holding banners and chanting slogans and our guide explained that there had been a revolt in a small Andean town, rebels had taken over the police station and 4 police officers had been killed. The ...

Arequipa - The White City of Peru

Advantages: beautiful and good trips available
Disadvantages: street sellers and pan pipes!

Arequipa is one of Peru’s finest cities and provides a fine escape from the harshness of travelling in some of the more rustic areas of this country. It is the second largest city in the country. It offers as much of a guarantee of good weather as there can be in Peru and provides both stunning architecture and a real appreciation of how Peruvians live their daily lives. Te city's name comes from the Quechua phrase "Arequipai" which means "Yes, ...
...major roads wherever possible. Arequipa is situated about 1.000km from Lima and as with most cities here is high at 2.350m above sea level. It has about 620.000 inhabitants. We headed here after crossing the border from Bolivia and then went back on ourselves to Cusco via Puno. If you have the time it is highly worthwhile to do this to allow a visit to the Colca canyon. The skyline around the city is dominated by El Misti the splendid snow capped ...

The Price of Peacefulness

Advantages: Intriguing past, beautiful interiors, peaceful atmosphere
Disadvantages: The history that made it possible

The convent of Santa Catalina doesn't look much from the outside. Its long outer wall blanks off one side of an otherwise busy street near Arequipa's central square. Arequipa is known as the "white city" because much of it is built of sillar, the local white volcanic stone, but time has stained the convent's porous sillar exterior a dingy grey. The effect is not so much forbidding as simply unappealing, unwelcoming. Still, as Arequipa's main tourist attraction, the convent was one of the reasons for our having diverted to the city on our way up to the Inca remains in the Andes, so we waited for a lull in the predatory onrush of taxis, crossed the road to the entrance and went in. Everything became quiet. Once within the walls, the visitor finds their occlusive bulk keeps the city's bustle at bay and all seems calm ...
