Puerto Heaven
Advantages: Paradise Disadvantages: You have to leave sometime....
This is the closest thing to paradise I have ever seen. Eden may have looked like this, if God was in a particularly good mood on the sixth day, or whenever it was he created it. The Falls mark the point where Brazil and Argentina border one another. The river Iguazu (Portuguese spelling – or Iguacu in Spanish) cascades down through a large valley at this point – see other reviews in the section for an explanation of how the valley was ... ...to an East Londoner whose only knowledge of rivers up ‘til this point was the grotty Thames, festooned with shopping trolleys and plastic bags. The river Iguacu is HUGE – its name literally meant “Big Water” in the language of the local people – until the Spanish arrived. Thankfully they kept the name intact, as well as the falls themselves, which send 1,200000 litres of water crashing down every second.
Iguacu is something ...

Take Your Own Breath Away In the Icy Land of Fire
Advantages: The mind-blowing scenery, the people, the food, everything... Disadvantages: None
Tierra Del Fuego. The Land of Fire.
Ah!
The memories the sole mention of this name brings are loaded with wild winds and fresh air, warm colours and warm people, dramatic panoramas and dense woods… and so much longing!
I was there with my ex-husband and our 2 year old son, who cared so little about the wind that was about to blow him away (literally) that we nearly thought he was possessed by something. But children do remind you that nature is ... ...I was wrong.
Tierra del Fuego was named so because of all the fires that the natives used to light, either to send messages to each other or to warm themselves or cook, before they were murdered one way or another. The first Europeans who got there were intrigued by all this smoke and called the place "The Land of Fire".
For information, the natives of Tierra del Fuego were:
The Selk'Nam (also known as Onas), they occupied the centre and north-western ...

La Plata means the Silver
Advantages: You'll visit a little secret place! Disadvantages: Just for a day.
Yes, La Plata means the silver but it can also means the money, and it was quite right during some time for this city to be called like that. La Plata is the capital of Buenos Aires Province, and after it was founded in the 1880's it was the heart of the whole country. Although now the heart and soul is in the Federal Capital, called Capital Federal, a very original name... La Plata kept it's interesting life. It's about 56 km southeast from the ... ...buildings and parks. La Casa de Gobierno, that is the Government House, is were the Governor "works", head of the city, and is one of the most impressive buildings. Another one is the Natural History Museum. And although their fossil collection is not very organized is a massive one. In the middle of Moreno Park, the main one in the city is La Plata's Founding Stone. A monument that represents the city's origin. Every major city in Argentina got ...

Andean Holidayin'
Advantages: great skiing, niice place Disadvantages: long distance between hotel and slopes
...the Argentinian ski resort of Chapelco as part of a snowboard trip to Chile. We checked into a hostel, checked out the resort, and then it started snowing… and just didn't stop, the snow gods resetting the conditions to "knee deep powder" every night for a week. It could have been utopia if it wasn't for the agony of stiff muscles and the nagging worry that the road back to Chile was blocked by the storm and my Santiago flight departure was rapidly ... ...;-).
The ski resort of Chapelco is located about 20km out of town, and can be accessed by bus or hitch hiking, although hitch hiking is a bit slower here than it is in Chile, you may have to wait up to an hour for a ride, although this was in shoulder/low season.
* Sounds interesting. What is the town like?
Its another gem. Situated on a lake and next door to a mountainous national park it's a popular holiday destination for the locals. Building ...

Argentina has everything
Advantages: Cheap, incredibly varied Disadvantages: Need to travel around to get the best out of it
At the moment, Argentina is an incredibly cheap place to visit, but even at US/European prices it would be worth going. It really does have every kind of feature you could ask for, and though you might have to travel around a bit to take advantage of this, that's a small price to pay.
I visited Beunos Aires, Mendoza and Las Lenas, staying 3 weeks altogether, and was filled with good impressions. Argentinian people are very friendly and approachable, ... ...especially in hostels. As an English-speaker though, I would warn others that you won't be able to rely on English as you would in Europe - basic Spanish is a bare minimum to enjoy an Argentinian trip. If you can speak only English, you won't have a lot of choice in where you go.
In a (ski) resort like Las Lenas you'll be OK with English. This is a great place to see the Andes, and if and when it snows, the skiing is fantastic and almost unrestricted. ...
