COME TO THE MOUNTAINS.

Advantages: A beautiful place.
Disadvantages: None.

I want to write about Ariege because it is a place I was introduced to by someone I met on the net. It is their home town and they were very proud of it, and it has become one of my favourite places in France. Ariege is the smallest county in France, and lies in the mountains just south of Toulouse. The avenues that lead out to Ariege are lined with trees and it always makes me think of what pictures France conjured up in my head long before I ever came to France. The countryside in this area is outstanding, and the historic interest that is alive today humbles a human being into knowing that events that took place in the past were huge events, and made a bigger impact on this earth than we will ever make. I say this because in this region, you have the Cathar strongholds dating back centuries. The Cathars moved away from the Roman ...

Review of Ariege

HELP MY FIND A FRIEND.

Advantages: MAYBE THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT IS INTERESTED.
Disadvantages: MAYBE THERE ARE NOT.

of disability. I have a modest income, but a secure living in my apartment. I am solvent. I speak three languages fluently. French, Spanish and English. I am not really a go out very much person unless I am in the right company. When friends come to stay, I go to visit Carcassone castle which is beautiful, and Ariege which is one of the smallest counties in France but which is a part of my roots in the mountains, and somewhere that has fond memories for me. I am a writer, and translator. I am a useful person, but do not seem to be able to track down a person that can live a slow life as I live, and who wants the same things as me, although my wants are very simple. I am a totally committed person and when committed to a relationship, am a one girl man. Sorry, just thought I would tell you a little more about me. ...

Heresy In The Hills

Advantages: Clear insight to one specific community told with a light touch
Disadvantages: None

Montaillou, by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie Montaillou probably counts as just about anybody's 'back of beyond'. It is a small peasant village high in the French Pyrenees. It is of no particular importance now. It never was. Except to those who lived there?and to one over-zealous Inquisitor who insisted that all testimony no matter how irrelevant be taken down verbatim. The Inquisitor was one Jacque Fournier - later to be Avignon pope Benedict XII. The Inquisition Register of Jacques Fournier, Bishop of Parmiers in Arièges in the Comté de Foix from 1318 to 1325 may have served the ends of the Roman Catholic Church at the time or it may have achieved very little. Having read the book, I tend to the latter view - but the greater service done to social historians several years later might just be worth the cost paid by ...
