"You're some man." she smiled "Where would I be without you." "Back at the hotel." I thought to ... Read review

Roamin' round ARLES

Advantages: Lots of character, Roman monuments, history
Disadvantages: It's a long way away

...on the motorway, heading for ARLES in Provence. The weather is not too great, it's overcast and everything is dull and grey. It's a long drive and it's not made any easier by my fellow road users. Is there some sort of French custom that I'm not aware of? Is it a requirement of passing a driving test in France that you have to be able to stray over the lines at frighteningly regular intervals, usually when some good natured, happy-go-lucky proxam-like ...

"Back at the hotel." I thought to myself - she doesn't drive.

We found our way to our hotel, The Acacias, which ... more

...areas. Arles has a passion for it's "bull games", a Camargue version of bullfighting where a troupe of young men dressed in white attempt to remove ribbons from a young camargue bull's horns, without getting tossed in the process. The good and intelligent bulls learn the rules of the game and become famous in their own right, reported on regularly in the local newspapers. In this French version of the game, the animal lives to tell the tale. Twice ...
...a brave young man. Arles also has a passion for horses. The sturdy white camargue ponies become ballerinas under the instruction of their 'gardian' masters. The ponies run semi-wild over the rough camargue pastures, along with the small black cattle, unique to this area. The animals are still herded by "gardians" the french version of the american cowboy, and it is a magnificent sight, worth getting up early to see. Arles is so much more that its ...

Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste.

painting style and mental well being. Despite spending most of this time with his brother Theo and other contemporary artists such as Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh suffered several bouts of madness. Famously during one outburst he cut off part of his left ear! He even admitted himself to a mental health clinic in Saint-Remy, near Arles, France in 1889. He never really recovered though and on 27th July 1890 he shot himself in the chest, dying two days later from his wounds. Despite his paintings now being worth millions he died destitute , as he only ever sold one of the hundreds of paintings he produced. Following Van Gogh's death and that of his brother Theo 6 months later stewardship of his collection ulimately passed to his nephew Vincent Willem Van Gogh (1890-1978). In 1962 the works which still remained in the family collection were ...

Disadvantages: Can get very busy, especially at weekends

with whom he he surrounded himself. The first section covers the paintings executed in the Netherlands and includes one his most famous works "The Potato Eaters" (1885). This was his firt large scale work featuring multiple figures. The genral feel of these works is somewhat dull and gloomy. These works feature countryside and peasant scenes. The next section covers the works he produced whilst living in Paris. During this period, his brother, Theo, was also in Paris and working for an international art dealer. Theo introduced Vincent to the work of the Impressionist artisis such as Monet and this had qutie an effect on Van Gogh, causing him to use brighter colours and examining the effect of light on what he saw. In 1886 Van Gogh moved to Arles in southern France and this period forms the next section of works. He invited his friend ...
