Everyone knows the tourist-packed shores of Windermere and Ambleside. But very few visitors make the trip a few miles north to see the less crowded charms of the Northern Lakes. That's a shame as Bassenthwaite, just outside e Keswick, is a stunningly beautiful location and at its head, surrounded by trees, is country house hotel Armathwaite Hall. Until recently a family home, the Hall is an imposing stone building straight out of an Agatha Christie drama. To step inside is to step back into the past. But, despite appearances, the hotel has been brought into line with modern tastes and all the bedrooms have been refurbished in retro style with the latest en suite facilities, furniture and fittings of the highest standard, and beds of top-class comfort. As you enter the Hall, you will be presented with a relaxing aperitif and from then on it is five-star service here. The dining room, with oak and chandeliers, is obviously little changed since the days it catered for private dinners. An adjacent bar serves cocktails, wines and beers. Plus an impressive list of malt whiskies. The culinary flavour is focussed on local produce cooked simply and in season with lots of fish (game in the autumn) and an extensive wine list. Afterwards, you can relax with a nightcap in the lounge. But the USP here, aside from the olde worlde atmosphere, is the new health and beauty spa which is amazing. There is a large heated swimming pool, steam room, sauna and most lavishly a hot tub where you can stretch out and enjoy the fantastic views over the lake and trees. And feel, for a day or two, like a millionaire. Armathwaite Hall would be a great place for a romantic break, family celebration, or any excuse really to get away from it all and sample the aristocratic life.
