Advantages: Not many. Fab if you love the sixties and all things American and free Disadvantages: Not many of note.
...Haight-Ashbury was made famous for hippies, LSD, free love and all that peacenik stuff in the Sixties. Much as parts of Haight-Ashbury try to cling onto this heritage the nefarious intrusion of capitalism has put paid to the freelove fest. There's still a lot of derelicts begging or looking wasted to suggest that someone somewhere had a BIG party. Now its mostly an area very frequented by tourists, lots of shops selling sixties memorabilia and a small park where you can park your tootsies.
Certainly a factor that has dramatically changed the Haight is the cost of accomodation, which was one reason for the original draw of people. Now its prohibitively expensive in part due to its name! T'chah, irony eh...!
I should point out theres famous very high quality Thai restaurant, got rave Zagats reviews etc, further down the Haight road...

Advantages: Cheap and right on Times Square Disadvantages: A bit on the shabby side
...Hotel Carter is often referred to as a hostel but I wouldn't go that far. Although it's not exactly New York luxury the room was en-suite and was clean and a good size, if a little dated (the carpet on the wall is somewhat different!). The Hotel didn't have a restaurant but there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Especially since you'll probably spend very little time in hotel room with the rest of New York to explore!...

...Although the hotel is situated in one of the best locations in New York City (it is a couple of blocks away from the centre of Times Square), it lacks a little quality. The restaurant facilities are not up to much, especially breakfast-wise and the rooms are nothing special. However, it is better than most hotels in New York and the location does more than make up for the slight lack of quality. The hotel is situated in a midtown location which is ideal for shopping and seeing most of the NYC sites....
