Advantages: Beautiful city, cheap food, great nightlife Disadvantages: Racism
...I went to Budapest in 1996 as part of a college field trip. The city itself is stunning with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and, if you're interested in art and design, a visit to the Museum of Decorative Arts in unmissable.
For a cheap holiday, stay in Pest rather than Buda - the same for eating out. Local food is cheap and filling and evn the best restaurants are inexpensive. At that time we were able to get an excellent three course meal for under £10 in fantastic surroundings. Elsewhere was even cheaper.
The nightlife is great - somewhere in Pest there is a bar with a swing in it, but unfortunately, as the nightlife is so great, I couldn't tell you where...
Racism, however, is rife in Hungary, so if you are black or Asian, be aware that you may find yourself forced into uncomfortable situations, equally the case for white...

Advantages: A quiet respite from the noise Disadvantages: A little light
...Hidden away down a side street or Soi there is a hidden gem of a one of the best private collections of Asianart and artifacts in Thailand. Welcome to the Jim Thompson House Museum.
James HW Thompson is the man who is generally recognized as the man who saved the then dwindling Thai silk industry and created the Jim Thompson Silk Company that is world famous today.
About 10 minutes walk from National Stadium BTS station and Mahboonkrong ( MBK ) shopping centre on Soi Kasemnan 2 – off Rama 1 - hides the tranquil Jim Thompson House Museum. House museum? Well, yes, because this museum used to be his home. Using the profits from the silk company he bought as many old paintings, statues and porcelain as possible when the market did not appreciate the beauty and value of Asianart.

Advantages: varied unboring exhibitions that change constantly Disadvantages: can be busy int he day
...in a glass box to the rear of the sculpture. The Asian world contains such things as old Japanese dynasty pottery and finely woven fantasic designed silk clothing, a study into the way of life, architecture. Some of the things to see are Asian & Islamic art, the British galleries, european sculpture, jewellery, textiles & dresses, ceramics & glass, paintings, photography and contemporary art. The temporary exhibitions feature such things ranging from Vivienne Westwood designs to Bill Brandt photography. I have not had time to discover all of the hidden treasures this museum possess but during my time in London i plan to discover as much as i can.
The fakes and forgeries room is fascinating....its amazing to look at such art and to understand why people, huge societies in the past were convinced of something being genuine was actually...
