Aspen is a beautiful town. No bones about it. It is surrounded by the Maroon Bells peaks, all of which are 14,000 feet or higher. In the summer and wintertime, it is one of the most beautiful places on the continent, and a fantastic place for hiking.
Unfortunately the town of Aspen is extremely overpriced if you want to stay there. Glenwood Springs is a much more affordable place to stay, and it is only an hour or so away.
Skiing at Aspen is exactly like skiing at any other resort, except much more expensive (also called "exclusive" by those who hold their noses high). The upside of this is that you can literally run into movie stars and CEOs from all around the world, and you will not encounter the crowds you would meet at Breckenridge or Keystone. The down side is that you will spend inordinate amounts of money, and the "rich and famous" will try to sue you if you accidentally bump into them. This is a very easy thing to do, since most of them can hardly ski...
The night life in Aspen is incredibly glitzy, as you walk among people you see on late shows and magazine covers from everywhere -but it comes at a high cost. Make sure your suitcases are packed with Gold and Platinum credit cards. You'll need them.
The one true and obvious advantage to skiing at Aspen is that you can enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. It is by no accident that all those movie stars and CEOs flock to the resort every year. I have found few places in Colorado that have such beauty.
If you are bold, you can also hike up Connundrum Creek nine miles to some intensely beautiful hot springs, where the stars have been known to skinny-dip (maybe a must-see, maybe not). Be prepared for extreme conditions in the winter on the way to the springs, as there are constant avalanches that roar down off of the mountains and bury the trail. You could just as easily find yourself in one of them. As with all outdoor activities, make sure you tell at least 2 people exactly where you are going (summer or winter).
I'd love to recommend Aspen to all, simply because of its beauty, but the old axiom holds true: "Beauty is only skin deep".
(Note: I have been to Aspen at all times of the year, but for skiing, December-February is the best)

If anybody's interested - go to Copper Mountain instead, quality accommodation, free lift passes when you stay in the resort, fantastic small town of Frisco just 5 miles down the interstate.

How could I not read this, although of course my "Aspen" is the good old Scottish tree of that name! Excellent review.
