Disadvantages: Not a beach holiday destination

...If Honolulu conjures up images of grass skirts, garlands and deserted beaches, think again. Honolulu is the cross-roads of the Pacific and a bustling international city. Skyscrapers dominate the down town skyline as they do in any other US state capital. Which is not to say Honolulu is a bad place to visit, just that it may not be what you expect. At Pearl Harbour you can visit the wreck of the USS Arizona, bombed by the Japanese. There is little good value accommodation in Honolulu. It is better to stay in neighbouring Waikiki. No vaccinations needed Flight time from UK is about 19 hours which is pretty horrendous.There is a good network of local buses. ...then about 5 1/2 to 6 hours over to Honolulu in Oahu, make use of this time. I got a rough guide to hawaii which I found invaluable, and while on the plane I made a shortlist of things to do - there really are that many! And you have to be carefull not to try and do so much that you don't enjoy them, here's our shortlist, and I'd highly recommend them all. Sea life centre - swim or teach dolphins - AMAZING Waikiki Beach - Just because its Waikiki Beach!! - Watch a sunset Make sure you get a Lei - or make one Watch a luaa - they have whole day experiences - Fantastic Whale watching trip - kids love boat rides - espeacially when you spot a whale Also see another island, we went to the Big Island and walked upto a live volcano - great experience Tips - yeap the money kind not the best way to use bicarb of soda :) Reccomend $1 - for each bag... ...hula dolls, etc, etc. You can get some cheap eats at the food court though so check it out and go for the plate lunches if you are into saving some pennies. Costs about $4 for a large helping of rice and either meat, chicken or veggie stew, one helping is enough for two if you are not too ravenous. *Honolulu Zoo We visited the zoo on our first day as Waikiki is surprisingly small and we were only halfway through our day and we had all but walked the whole area. We came across the zoo and decided to go check it out. It cost about $6 adult going on memory and as far as zoos go, this one was pretty good. I was heartened to see the animal enclosures seemed to have the animal’s welfare in mind and were heavily covered in long grassy areas and tree cover, great for the animals but I imagine a few people would find it annoying that you can...
