I recently stayed 3 nights in the Astor Hotel, Zurich whilst attending a conference in the city. While the staff were very helpful and the accomodation adequate, it didn't overly impress me.

The hotel is conveniently located, just 5 minutes' walk from the city centre and has a tram line and stop just outside the front entrance. This can be very handy, but the noise can also make it difficult to get an early night. The single room I stayed in was well-sized and had a queen-sized bed, 50-channel TV (including many foreign channels such as BBC Prime), mini-bar and en-suite bathroom. It was always warm (sometimes too warm), but the one thing it lacked was any tea/coffee-making facilities.

As mentioned, the hotel staff are very friendly and willing to help out. They also speak good English, which saved me from embarrassing myself too often with my somewhat rusty German. Breakfast was the only meal provided and was continental, so none of your typical "Brit abroad", full-English stuff was available. That wasn't too much of a problem to me, though. Cereal, croissants, yogurt, fruit and even rollmop herring were provided along with fresh tea and coffee.

Overall, though, at 190 Swiss Francs per night (approx 80 GBP), it just struck me as an expensive bed and breakfast. Perhaps that just comes with the territory, though - I had it booked for me, so I don't know what other hotels' prices were like. Still, if you are willing to pay for the convenient location, then it's fine. I do intend to go back to Zurich some day - it's a beautiful little city - but I think I'll look elsewhere for accomodation with more benefits. Hotel Astor isn't bad - it's just not great.
