CHECK-IN
Arriving four hours before our flight because of the recent security upheaval we entered the airport and perused the departure monitors. Our flight was shown to be Zone B.
Proceeding to Zone B which consisted of 12 check-in desks I was at first alarmed to see no sign of Astraeus. All the desks were "First choice" check ins. Pre-booked seats are not operated by Astraeus so getting there early was a priority for us as I like to be with my wife at the rear of the plane, and I wanted a window seat.
After a short while two of the "First choice" desks closed and a full three and a half hours before the flight, Astraeus opened two desks of which we were first in the queue. After the usual security questions check-in was rapid and efficient and I was rewarded with two seats at the very rear of the aircraft. (No kids kicking me in the back).
BOARDING
Already in possession of my tickets with my seat numbers we waited for the call for boarding. Forty minutes before the flight we were called to Gate 45. We were taken by bus to the aircraft and this was also quick and painless.
I was surprised on reaching the aircraft that it was a Boeing 757 as when I had asked which aircraft we would be flying on, I was previously told a Boeing 737, which is smaller and more cramped.
As I reached the top of the stairs I was greeted by a very attractive well dressed young lady in airline uniform. She gave me a very warm greeting and I was shown to my seat. That's when I got the biggest surprise of all, the seat itself.
Previously unbeknown to me, Astraeus airline seats are configured with only 201 seats on the 757s compared with the usual 233 seats on most other competitor's aircraft. Forty seats or six rows are taken out to give you some really impressive legroom. This means that the seat pitch is a minimum of 36inches compared to the normal 31 in the main cabin. (It's also larger on the 737s at 31inches rather than 28).
I noticed the aircraft had in-flight entertainment, both audio and video, although apparently the 737s do not have this advantage.
THE FLIGHT
The aircraft taxied away from the hanger and the captain then made an announcement that we would be not taking off just yet as there was an air traffic control problem with the Greek air authorities having a large amount of aircraft in their airspace and that there would be a delay of an hour and a quarter which I wasn't exactly pleased about. We then taxied to a quiet part of the airfield to sit and wait.
During the wait the airline gave all the passengers a choice of champagne cocktails or fruit juice free of charge.
The actual delay ended up at only forty five minutes and was obviously beyond the operators control so I can not really complain about Astraeus on that point.
After taking off the Captain announced the flight would take three hours fifteen minutes and that he would attempt to make up the time lost for the delay. We must have had a tail wind because we eventually landed only ten minutes later than was scheduled. The flight itself was uneventful. A film was shown which did not seem to be very high quality as it kept jumping. There were also a couple of audio channels. Headsets were sold at £2.50 a pair but I always carry my own anyway.
There are complimentary kid's packs with drawing etc to keep them occupied. Inbound flights get a complimentary newspaper. There are duty free sales during the flight together with complimentary tea and coffee. Also available is an Astraeus in-flight magazine.
Disabled facilities and attentiveness was good.
The staff were courteous, more than helpful, and thorough throughout the flight. Information was good and we were kept up to date by the captain on our progress.
THE MEAL
This was another unexpected surprise. Complimentary and available to all passengers with no pre-payment. It consisted of Sausage, cheese omelette, baked means, and potato cubes. It was hot and it was very nice by normal airline standards. There was also a roll with butter, a cake, and yoghurt. This was followed by hot towels and you were supplied with a rubbish bag that fitted onto the table knob so there was no rubbish all over the slip down table. A very good idea, which made breakfast rubbish retrieval easy and simple.
CONCLUSION
The seat was the jewel in the crown for me on this airline. Sacrificing 40 seats (six rows) for its passengers comfort is an impressive gesture. It is the only flight I have ever endured that I was actually comfortable enough to sleep on. It really made a pleasant change to land at my destination, relaxed and refreshed, ready for my holiday, instead of squashed and cramped, desperate to get off the plane as fast as possible.
The food was good, the staff were excellent.
Together with the little touches like hot towels, the rubbish bag, and complimentary drinks, its nice to know that some charter airlines still do care about passenger comfort and contentment on their flights instead of just the amount of profit they make at the expense of consumer satisfaction. Most of the facilities available on Astraeus flights are only available for long haul flights or with scheduled carriers at a price.
To conclude, a very good airline and a very positive experience. They have my highest recommendation. I will certainly be looking for them in the future.
Advantages: ON TIME Disadvantages: No Entertainment
Astraeus are a 'No frills' airline flying to mostly european destinations from various british airports including Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Belfast.
Check In
No Queue, Unbelievable, Nobody, not one, not a bag in site, no screaming children up to early, no chav with a boom box, brilliant. Ticket-less check quick easy and simple.
Take-off
Although not qualified to comment on the actual take-off procedure, 3 essentials were met:
1. We did ... ...Plenty of leg room (Im 6ft 1")
Overall I would reccomend Astraeus for doing exactly what they say on the tin, flights to destinations, on time, no frills, simple.
Astraeus also fly from Gatwick , Leeds/bradford and Belfast to name but a few. Full details on www.FlyAstraeus.com ...

Advantages: Very cheaply priced. no tickets. Disadvantages: Shabby old looking plane. miserable staff.
...to Malta from Manchester with astraeus airlines in April 2005. The check in was using a ticketless system which was all new to us, infact we were a little apprehensive that we had been conned. Checkin was slightly quicker than having tickets, and it all went smoothly. We got on the plane and it appeared a little shabby/old but ok. The staff didn't have a smile between them, and were quite rude at times. There was no entertainment on the plane but ... ...quite a worrying vibration/rattle throughout the flight which really didn't help me relax, otherwise the flight was smooth. We normally fly with Air malta who provide a magazine all about malta, a daily paper and drinks before the meal are complimentary. With Astreus there was nothing to read to take my mind off the rattle and we had to pay for our drinks. We landed fine after an argument with a flight attendant about waking up my 3 year old sleeping ...

We booked through Red Sea Flights for a recent trip to Sharm and were flown out by Astraeus. I had heard from them before as my hubby is an Iron Maiden fan and the lead singer is a pilot for the company (no he didn't fly us)
We booked the flights and hotel through imperial Travel buit will book direct with red sea and med hotels next time. The flight was £260. The plane was a 737 so the leg room wasn't as good as could be but I was comfortable and ... ...option to upgrade
The flight outward was on time and the plane was spotless. The staff were very efficient and the food edible, we were served a chicken pasta bake with vegetable which was piping hot. As it was the first time I or my daughter had flown the captain advising us of where we were was fascinating
On our return we were held on the runway for 30 minutes. As a new security measure following the Naama Bay bombings, immigration hold back ...

Advantages: Excellent customer service. Disadvantages: No tele or radio on the 737 i went on in october 2004.
...weeks with Longwoods, who used astraeus airlines. The planes are all fairly new (within the last two/three years i beleive). Other than being like you would expect a plane to be like, the only drawback was that they had cut their costs by not including inflight movies or radio, so we had to take our mp3 players to amuse us for the 4.5 hours to egypt. Although this bothered me before getting on the plane it didnt really make that much difference.
... ...fed us at breakfast time on the way out but the roast chicken dinner we got for tea on the return flight was as good as plane food can get. Finally all the staff where happy, smiley people who were very helpful and polite. And from a nervous plane passenger i was very relaxed. ...

Advantages: good value for money, the best for diving and snorkelling, friendly people Disadvantages: "Come sign my guestbook"
Me and my partner just returned from a 8 days holiday in Sharm el Sheikh (Naama Bay). It was a wonderful experience - please read our review.
********** BOOKING **********
We booked via lastminute.com just 4 days before we went there - at £ 179 per person for 7 nights a real bargain. Included were:
- flight with Astraeus (charter airline) from and to Gatwick
- 7 nights accommodation incl. breakfast in the Ocean Bay Hotel
- transfer from and to the airport in Sharm el Sheikh
Travel insurance is included in our bank account arrangements, so we didn't need to buy. If you intend to go diving a lot, an extra insurance cover is advisable.
After the booking we got contacted by the travel agency ('Explorers' - specialist in diving holidays). The whole transaction went very smooth, no problems whatsoever. Two days before ...
Advantages: Fantastic lush gardens, luxurious rooms, friendly attentive staff Disadvantages: Expensive drinks in the hotel
We stayed at the Kairaba hotel on our first visit to the Gambia during the Easter holidays. I am a teacher and we were keen to avoid the usual tourist traps that would be full of screaming kids. After an uncomfortable flight (Astraeusairline from Manchester are to be avoided!!!) we touched down. The first thing you have to do is pay the tourist tax of £10 (payable in sterling, you won't be able to change your money until you get to Gambia but don't worry as everyone takes/wants £'s and $'s). I'd advise using one of the airport baggage handlers as they ward off the bumsters (Gambians offering their help for a price) who wait between the airport and the coaches. The transfer to the hotel was quick and we were given cold drinks enroute which was a nice touch. It was on the trip from the airport that we realised we really were in Africa ...
Advantages: Croatia Wants Tourists Disadvantages: Tourism Could Spoil Croatia
was clearly the oldest ship we had sailed on and had an air of faded grandeur about it, but it had a charming Croatian crew, a swimming pool, Lido bar, a Grand Salon and a very attractive restaurant and most importantly with just the one sitting as a two sitting restaurant is a nightmare to avoid on any cruise ship. Once shown to our cabin I instantly refused to sleep in a cabin with no windows or portholes (It felt like an underwater coffin) and we managed to organise an alternative cabin with two portholes then I was happy. I think Morty took me seriously when I told him there was no way there'd be any sex in this underwater tomb so we'd better get a better cabin than this for our eight day holiday.
