The 111 guestrooms and 12 luxurious suites manage to somehow combine traditional English elegance with 21st century modernism and technology. Many of the bedrooms have a stunning view overlooking Green Park, which creates a feeling of tranquillity in the heart of London. It's amazing when a hotel manages to transcend a much more tranquil setting than the busyness of the immediate locality promote. It is a hotel ideal for relaxing after a busy day in the capital. Unless of course, after a hectic schedule of meetings in the city, you have to dump your bags, shower, change and get back out of your room in half an hour to attend an evening function!! Did I truly manage to enjoy, unwind, and relax in the fabulous surroundings I was again afforded? Was I heckers like ! In fact, the comfort of the bed was not fully appreciated, because after dinner, my industry colleagues and I frequented the Dover Street Wine Bar up the road until circa 2am and had to be up for a meeting at 7.45am …. Wicked, rest, no, for, the!
However, whichever room you are provided, you will enjoy an incredibly friendly and professional service. I was actually completely bowled over by the friendliness of the staff, which is possibly more pronounced than in other hotels due to the small boutique style of the hotel maybe, I'm not entirely sure!! Maybe, it's just because I flirted too much with the Italian and German reception desk girls !! ;-)
The bedrooms are complete with the following facilities;
Hypnos deluxe beds
Bang & Olufsen televisions
32'' or 42'' plasma screen televisions
Broadband internet access
eTV entertainment system encompassing digital TV and radio, pay per movies, CD and DVD player and web based games
Direct dial telephone with two phone lines and voicemail
Power showers
Minibar
24 hour room service
Complimentary tea and coffee making facilities
In-room safe
Individually controlled air conditioning
Dry cleaning - laundry service - pressing service
Now, Internet access was also something I was fairly impressed with, in terms of the charging, as most hotels give you some pretty crap options, such as an expensive charge for every half hour used, and then a hefty 24-hour usage charge from between £15-£20.
The Athenaeum allows you to choose 3 options; £5 for 6 hours £10 for 12 hours £15 for 24 hours

~~~~~~~~~~~~ Apartments: ~~~~~~~~~~~~
The hotels' apartments are located within a row of Edwardian townhouses adjacent to the hotel, for a combination of comfort, modern rationalism, and privacy. Each one and two bedroom apartment has been individually and tastefully designed, some veer to the traditional, others more contemporary. Guests benefit from all of the services and facilities of the hotel, including room service, daily maid service and laundry service. No two of the 30 apartments are alike.
Some of the apartments are English classics. Some are designed in a more contemporary and individual townhouse style.
The apartments cost between £500 and £750 per night, plus vat and breakfast.
~~~~~~~~~ Meetings: ~~~~~~~~~
The hotels' first floor is entirely dedicated to meetings and special events.
There are 3 specific rooms, which allow for flexible small to medium sized business meetings, finely combining technology with style, the mood is business like yet elegant with friendly service particularly high on the agenda.
Meeting room features include;
Plasma screen with ETV - DVD, video, TV and email capabilities
Broadband internet access
ISDN lines
Flipcharts
Individually controlled lighting
Pull down screens
Individual controlled air conditioning
Mini Bar
Business Suite - PC, printer, broadband internet access, phone and fax
~~~~~ Spa: ~~~~~
The hotel spa is open exclusively to Athenaeum guests, and allows for an excellent way to unwind after a busy day in the Smoke. You can take a warm relaxing dip in the jacuzzi, unwind in the sauna and steam rooms or workout in the gym. Alternatively, body wraps with enzymatic sea mud or a mineral salt scrub are highly recommended by the hotel … I didn't have time to sample any of the delights and don't expect to be able to afford to stay at the hotel on my own expense!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Food & Beverage: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The small bar to the right hand side of the hotel is a whisky bar and is very elegantly decorated, with whiskies and other spirits from all over the globe. It looks quite expensive, and is very popular with guests.
To the rear right of the hotel is the equally elegantly decorated restaurant, with fabulous central seating that snake throughout the centre of the room. The restaurant provides both a Table D'Hote and A La Carte dinner menu for guests and is marketed towards coupled dining, but there is a table allowing for up to groups of ten.
The lounge to the rear left of the hotel is very elegantly and traditionally dined, with a hint of modern, to relax, unwind and enjoy afternoon tea, or, as we did … an early evening glass of Champagne. Don't mind if we do thanks !!
Advantages: Location, location, location Disadvantages: Out of date, overpriced.
I stayed in a one bedroom bedroom apartment here. It was in a great location for tourists, short-stayers, theatre goers and shoppers. The staff were friendly, helpful and had perfect english. They were on hand almost 24/7 and the service certainly matched the advertised 4 stars.
The apartment itself would have been 4 stars 5-10 years ago, that was very clear but it is in definite need of refurbishment.
Each apartment was decorated differently - ... ...of booking as we were not offered the option to. Our apartment was dated, garish and overly feminine. It was aiming for luxury but was more mutton dressed as lamb with damaged gold wallpaper with a 'regal' stripe and an interesting carpet and bedding colour combo! The lounge was much of the same but well equipped and the kitchen was in its own more modern timezone.
If you have children I think there are more appropriate areas of London to stay in ...
