I passed through Atlanta recently on my way from Gatwick to New Orleans. Although this is the world's busiest airport, I had no problems at all finding my way to my connecting flight.
On arrival at the international terminal, I collected my baggage then passed through customs and re-checked in my baggage for the connecting flight, and passed through immigration with little delay.The airport is arranged as a series of concourses, connected by an underground railway. Directions are clearly signposted, with plenty of video screens to show you which gate you need to be at. The trains run frequently, so there is very little waiting, and it is a short walk from the train to the departure gate.
I didn't spend very long in Atlanta, so I can't comment on the shops or catering facilities, but the experience was about as painless as it is possible to make it.
If you have a choice of hub airports for a trip to the US, I can recommend Atlanta.

I always thought Heathrow was the worlds busiest airport? I have been known to be wrong many times in the past though. Similar to the other comment - promising start but then justs fades away - more information and detail would be good. If you update please let me know and l will rerate.

I'm sorry, there is too little information here for me to rate this op highly. As a frequent traveller to the US I have spent hours and hours in lines waiting for immigration, but you didn't mention immigration at all. Does this mean you waited less for immigration that the shuttle train you mentioned waiting for; if so thats a major plus for ATL. What about shops and restaurants? And waiting areas?
