This year we decided to have a short break during the May Day bank holiday weekend somewhere in the UK. We had always wanted to visit Pembrokeshire in the South West corner of Wales, and so decided to look up some places to stay in the area. As a result of our search, we decided to book 3 nights at a B&B called Atlantic View.
The place itself is situated in Broad Haven, which lies 6 miles to the west of Havordfordwest. It is easy enough to get to although it does lie on a very narrow and steep hill, on a cliff overlooking the bay and beach in Broad Haven. It is personally run by Bob and Frances Crawford and comprises of 4 en suite double bedrooms, and 1 twin bedroom with a private bathroom. 2 of the bedrooms are downstairs which are ideal and accessible for disabled guests, and all rooms come with a colour television, hot drink making facilities, and central heating, as well as an oil filled radiator to use if the central heating has not been turned on. In addition according to their website, all of the rooms have recently been refurbished to the highest standard, which I would personally agree with after our visit. The B&B holds a 3 star bed and breakfast rating from the Welsh tourist board. The price when we visited was around £30 per person, per night, which worked out around £180 for a three-night stay, which is pretty much par for the course across the Pembrokeshire National Park.
We booked our accommodation by conversing via an email address given on their website, and further to this we had to send a cheque with a £50 deposit. I am not sure if this is always the case, or just because of the fact it was the May bank holiday weekend. Bookings can also be made via a phone call as well, although there is currently no facility for online booking. In addition when it comes to making payment at the end of your holiday there, they do not currently accept credit or debit cards, and so payment has to be made either via cash or old fashioned cheque :)
Our room had fantastic views of Broad Haven itself, and most rooms have this view. In addition, the breakfast room has the same amazing views, and we personally witnessed the gannets, which were nesting in the surrounding cliffs diving into the water to feed in the morning, which was truly an amazing sight. The accommodation also had plenty of car parking spaces on a stoned area to the side of the property, and you are also welcome to use the lawned areas in front of the property for sunbathing. The room itself was immaculately clean, with good decor, and with windows along the whole side of it, giving fantastic views out, and also making the room feel nice and airy. The towels were changed on a daily basis, with the en-suite comprising of a toilet, sink and a power shower cubicle, all of which were in a good condition and very clean.
Breakfast was served in the dining room at a time to suit you in the morning. An order was given to them when we arrived and we stuck with that throughout our 3 mornings. Breakfasts started with your choice of either grapefruit or cereals, along with tea or coffee and toast. Then you were served with a cooked breakfast, which comprised of good portions of bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and a fried egg, although I personally chose to omit the egg as I am allergic to them on their own!!! The food was cooked well, served in a pleasant friendly manor, and the dining room itself was very pleasantly arranged, again well decorated and with views down across the bay below.
Atlantic View is not just a B&B though. They have a lawned area to the side and rear of the property which is available to pitch a tent for camping, and they also have 2 fully self contained holiday cottages on site, for those wanting to take family away with them, with pets also being welcome here. However we personally didn't go near these so I can't really comment more on them at this point except to say that they hold a 4 star self-catering tourist board rating.
Locally in Broad Haven and nearby Little Haven, both within walking distance, (although it is hilly and difficult for the less mobile) are good restaurants, convenience stores and pubs, and the site is ideally placed as a base to explore both the north of the area (St. Davids and Ramsey Island) as well as the more popular south (Tenby, Skomer Island).
To sum up I would recommend this accommodation to any couple wanting a nice long weekend away in the gorgeous surrounds of the Pembrokeshire National Park. You are sure of a friendly welcome as well as clean rooms and a good breakfast and what more could you want from a B&B?
