It's so cold here! Anyway, I've got quite a lot to say about Cyprus and the Hotel Atlantica, so here we go!
CYPRUS - - - - - - - - - - - Cyprus is a an island located in the Mediterranean sea, south of Turkey, and close to Egypt. The official language is Greek, although being a former British colony, English is very widely spoken. The currency is the Cypriot Pound (CYP), which is 78p exactly, to our £1 sterling.
The weather is nice enough to visit Cyprus from April to about October. It's hottest in July and August - it was well in the 30's and 40's during the daytime while I stayed there, and in the 20's even at night, with very little wind either, to take the edge off. It's almost unbearable, but hey, would you rather have the heat and sunshine of Cyprus or rain and wind of England?!
HOTEL ATLANTICA - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Hotel Atlantica is a part of a chain, with sister hotels in Paphos, and Rhodes and Kefalonia in Greece. It's located in the busy resort of Potamos Yermasoyia (Yermy-soya) in Limassol. You can go there on an all-inclusive, half board or self catering basis. The hotel is set out across several buildings flanking a quiet side road.
The all-inclusive and half board guests stay at the main hotel building, whereas the self catering guests stay at the Atlantica Gardens, formerly known as the Royal Court Apartments, across the road. The Gardens has it's own 24 hour reception, swimming pool, bar, restaurant, garden area and lounge. I stayed at the Atlantica Gardens, although I was there on an all inclusive basis, as the hotel was fully booked up - it's perfectly adequate, no niggles at all, except for the fact that it takes a good 5 minutes to walk to the main hotel building. 5 minutes is nothing at all, but when the temperatures are hitting 45C or when you're in your bikini, dripping and want to dash to your hotel room to change, it seems like a very long time!
The hotel itself is very smart and elegant looking, with a red and gold colour scheme, with marbled floors, flower arrangements everywhere, classical music playing, that sort of thing. It's also very large and sprawling - it's easy to get lost at first!
The vast majority of guests are British - you can decide whether that's a good thing or bad for yourselves. On one hand, it's great that the fit guy staying on the same floor as you speaks the same language so you can happily chat him up without any misunderstandings (although a surprising amount of people found it hard to decipher my accent!) but at the same time, hearing people chat about Big Brother and seeing sunburnt scallies in Burberry caps took away the whole break-from-reality feeling of going on holiday!
The whole grounds of the hotel are hosed down, swept and washed every morning, including the swimming pool areas, at about 7am - 8am, so don't be surprised to see the ground wet - the first day of the holiday, I was genuinely appalled to see that it had been raining overnight! There are always maids around, cleaning and sweeping and polishing, which is reassuring to see, and they do an amazing job - everything is spotless and you'd be hard pushed to find a single speck of dust within the whole hotel!
One thing to mention is that there are lots of cats running around, and plenty of kittens too. I don't really like cats and I have no idea why there are so many, but they all look healthy enough, if a bit thin, and it's not like the hotel grounds are covered with cat wee and poo, so I can't complain really!
LOCATION - -- - - - - - - - - - Yermasoyia, about an hour's drive from Paphos airport, is quite a busy resort, with lots of shops, bars, clubs and restaurants nearby. The hotel is down a quiet side road though, so you won't be kept awake at night. It's a five minute's walk across the main road to the beach, which doesn't sound too bad, but the main road is actually a dual carriageway, and a very busy one at that, which makes things a bit difficult! There aren't any traffic lights either, so you literally have to take your lives into your hands and pelt across the road as fast as you can... very nerve wracking!
There is a taxi rank, run by the hotel, and a mini-market outside - you just walk out of the hotel and it's on your left, on either side of the pathway to the Atlantica Gardens, which may be useful if you're self-catering. To get to the beach, you carry on walking past the mini-market to the end of the road, cross the main road and walk for a few minutes left, past the McDonald's. The beach is quite small and rocky, and has dark sand, almost like mud. It's not especially pleasant, but the water is very clear and soft. It gets deep rather steeply though, so be careful.
ALL INCLUSIVE BASIS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I went all-inclusive, which included all my meals, snacks, drinks, the entertainment stuff that goes on, etc etc. If you're planning to stay in the hotel for most of your stay, you don't need to bring very much money with you at all. The only things you have to pay for, as far as I remember, are drinks after 12am, imported alcohol and crisps.
When you're checking in, you're given a coloured wrist band to wear at all times, to signify your board basis. You also have to sign for your meals, and when ordering drinks, give your room number. If you're staying half board or self catering, you can have a tab on your hotel room, and pay for all your drinks when checking out, rather than paying for them all individually.
Just a tip for you - if you're going self catering and are thinking of upgrading to half board or all inclusive, it's cheaper to do so at the hotel rather than through your travel agent. They also have lots of deals like, buy 7 dinners and get 7 breakfasts free, 3-for-2 breakfasts, that sort of thing.
THE ROOMS - - - - - - - - - - -- - - As I've said, although we booked on an all inclusive basis, we booked late and were put in the studio apartments, in the Atlantica Gardens across from the main building, where the restaurants, three of the bars and two of the swimming pools are located. These were the same as the hotel rooms, with the addition of a kitchenette, with toaster, a hob, kettle, some cutlery and plates. There were either two or fhree beds, a TV with a few English channels, wardrobe, a dressing table with mirror, air conditioning, a balcony and a bathroom.
The bathroom is pretty basic, but adequate. There is a small bath with shower attachment, a sink with a marbled surround, toilet. In addition, there's also a hairdryer attached to the wall, which is pretty useless, producing only a very weak jet of cold air - you're better off taking your own, or not using one at all - and a dispenser of something which proclaimed itself to be a shower gel, bath creme, shampoo and conditioner, all in one, which I didn't try. One niggle was that my bath plug didn't fit properly, so I had to take showers rather than baths, which I much prefer. There's also a small bin to the side of the toilet, where you put your toilet paper. For the first few days, I didn't realise you couldn't put tissue in the toilet, so if the sewage system in Limassol has broken down... sorry!
Unlike most other hotels I've been to, rather than giving you a card key for your room, that you slot in, you're given a proper key with a bulky, metal 'Hotel Atlantica' tag attached. This was quite annoying - it was too heavy and bulky to tuck into my pocket, as I could do with a card, so I had to carry my bag around with me everywhere, just to keep the key in.
The rooms were set out rather strangely. You had the main doors along the corridors, which opened up into another corridor with three separate rooms (A, B and C), but you weren't allowed the key to the main door for 'safety' reasons, so it was up to you to wedge the door open at all times.
Rooms are cleaned and tidied daily, and towels changed every other day.
Another point worth mentioning is that the lift door in the Atlantica Gardens doesn't close properly, so there's always a small gap. Does it really matter, you say? It does if you've seen The Grudge! It was quite a shabby lift and I was expecting it to break down at any minute, which doesn't exactly help with my nerves!
ENTERTAINMENT - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - In the daytime, there are organised games like volleyball, water polo, It's A Knockout and something called Donkey Derby - don't ask! There are specific times for these activites listed on a noticeboard in the main building, near the entrance to the pool area.
There's a kid's disco in the evening at 8.30pm for an hour, with dancing and boys vs girls games (with rounds like 'find as many items beginning with T' for example), followed by a game of cash bingo, where the prize money is the amount of money raised from selling the tickets (I won 100CYP on my birthday! Not bad at all!) and the actual evening entertainment - while I was there, they had a Cypriot night, a men vs women gameshow, a Mr Atlantica beauty contest and various other things. You can tell they aren't professional and the entertainment team have the stupidest nicknames, but credit goes to Dot de Dot Dot Dot, Crazy Claire, the Schoolteacher, Yo Yo Jo Jo and Tiny Tom for all the effort they put into it! It's tacky and cheesy, but very funny with it, trust me - well, it is when you have four PIna Coladas down you!
If you'd prefer to go outside of the hotel, there are plenty of bars, clubs and pubs in the resort to visit. I didn't go to any of these (being 16 and on holiday with my parents, rolls eyes) but there's a massive choice to choose from, and great value, according to some people I met who did go out clubbing - lots of special offers and very generous measures.
THE FOOD - - - - - - - - - - Breakfast consists of a full English, different types of bread with jams and different spreads, pancakes, waffles, and fruits. It is served from 7am to 10am. Lunch, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, is normally chips with meats like stuffed lamb with feta cheese, grilled chicken, some sort of fish, etc. There's more variety at dinner (7pm - 10pm) - they had roast potatoes, garlic bread, grilled fish, pork, chicken, beef, fried courgettes (they called them zucchini though), steamed vegetables, etc etc. There was a children's buffet, with things like chicken nuggets, chips, beans and fish fingers. NB: Men are required to wear long trousers for dinner - no shorts or sportswear. I don't really see the point, but there you go!
The meals are buffet style, so you help yourself, but there's also waiter service, and they bring you your drinks, clear away your plates, etc. There are always a few hovering around ready to take away finished plates, and most are very friendly and attentive - although the older ones tended to be quite grumpy!
In between the mealtimes, if you're peckish, you can have snacks like kebabs, salads, chips and souvlaki (a kebab in pitta bread - absolutely gorgeous), or order a custom made pizza, which you can eat in the canopied outdoor restaurant area overlooking the pool, or if you need to cool down, there's free ice-cream! It's not exactly Ben and Jerry's, but doesn't taste cheap and powdery, either.
The food was pretty good; we ate out once and the quality of the hotel food was much better. Excluding breakfast, there's quite a lot of variety and it all tastes really good - you won't go hungry!
There was a cocktail party on the second day, which was on the Tuesday. I think this is a weekly event. Basically, a whole load of cocktails are made up and served in the garden area, with canapes, at about 7pm. It seems a bit random, really, but hey, I'm not complaining!
Another point worth mentioning is that, as with a lot of foreign countries, drinking tap water isn't recommended, but you can get bottled water freely from the bars and the restaurants. Much more handy than trekking to the mini market across the road, and lugging litres of bottles back!
Okay, and now to the bit you're all interested in! I hate to say it, but I was definitely the typical English girl taking advantage of the free booze. Beer (the local one is Keo), cocktails, shots, mixers - they're all included! Fantastic! I'm not sure if there's a legal drinking age in Cyprus - according to one website Google threw up, there isn't, which seems a bit unlikely, but I was always served without any problems, although I'm only 16 and have always been told I look quite young for my age. Decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing for yourselves!
There are four bars dotted around - one by each of the pools (three of them), one inside the restaurant, one inside one of the apartment blocks. They get very busy in the evenings though, so expect to have to wait for your drinks - unless a dodgy Greek waiter takes a fancy to you and insists on serving you before everyone else, that is! The measures are *very* generous, mind you - don't say I haven't warned you! If you're not into your alcohol, you can have Coke, 7-Up, Fanta, non-alcoholic cocktails, iced-coffee, tea, etc etc from 10am to midnight.
THE STAFF - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The majority of the staff are very friendly and smiley, and can't do enough for you, but quite a few of the female bar staff can be quite short and 'off', almost to be point of being rude, especially the younger ones. Not a major problem, but nonetheless, a smile would be nice! And then you have the opposite problem with some of the male barmen - some can be a, um, bit overly friendly, but again, it's not a big problem and it can be to your benefit to be nice to them - one, whose name completely escapes me, would always serve me ahead of everyone else in the queue, saving me a good 10-minute wait - it was slightly embarrassing, but very nice of them, although I'm not sure if they'd be as generous if I was a balding 50-year old rather than a 16 year-old girl in a skirt...
Ha, this reminds me - at one point I was quite taken with one of the barmen; he was gorgeous and I *thought* he was very sweet, on my first night he told me that, and I quote, I was stunning and had beautiful, mysterious eyes (sounds cheesy but it was his accent that did it!) but he then went on to say the exact same thing, word for word, to my sister and cousin on different occasions! It's actually rather funny - what, does he not realise that girls talk to each other about these things?! Ah well, you know what they say about Greek men...
FACILITIES - - - - - - - - - - - - - There are three swimming pools; two outdoor ones and an indoor one. The main swimming pool is gorgeous; it's a lagoon style pool with a waterfall in the middle, and it's absolutely enormous! There are sunbeds and chairs all around it, but they get taken up very early, so it's best to go down with your towels at 8am on the dot (any earlier and they'll be removed by the maids and put on the steps near the main entrance) and save some, or else you won't be able to get hold of any for love nor money later on in the day.
There are also lots of pool tables dotted around (50C, about 40p, a game), an arcade room, a gym and sauna, squash courts, a beauty salon, cards room, a library, and a couple of lounge areas with TVs and lots of squidgy leather sofas. As well as that, there are two large parks for kids, with slides, see-saws and play areas, table tennis tables, computers with internet access and a grassy sunbathing area, so there's lots to do!
MY EXPERIENCE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When we finally arrived at the hotel, after a 4 hour plane journey and an hour on a coach, we were taken to the studio apartments and checked in. This was all fine, no problems there, and we were shown to the Atlantica Gardens, the block where we would be staying. I wasn't too impressed initially, as I had a beautiful view of the car park from my balcony, but I fell asleep quickly and woke up at 6am. It was already scorching - opening the balcony and walking out onto it was like walking into a blast furnace! The balcony was very large and circular, and if I stood on my tip toes and leant out as far as I dared, I could see a mosque (I think it was a mosque... it had a dome and a minaret tower) on a hill on my left and a small triangle of sea on my right, in between two hotel buildings, so it wasn't *that* bad (!).
Anyway, we settled into a routine quite quickly. I'd get up at 8am, lay down some towels on a few sunbeds, then wake everybody else up and start to sunbathe while they ate breakfast. At about 9-10am, when the weather started to hot up and the water wasn't so cold, I'd get into the water. I can't swim, so all I did was splash around, shriek when I got water in my eyes and bob around on my lilo, trying not to crash into anybody - much more fun than doing laps around the pool, don't you think?!
Anyway, around midday, it would be too hot to stay in the pool, so I'd sunbathe for a while longer, then shower, wash my hair and change, then me and my cousin would laze around the bar, bitch about everyone we know and mack on all the fit men. We just chilled out, it was really nice. Later on, we might go for a wander around the shops or to the beach, before going back to the hotel for dinner.
After we'd eaten, I'd normally have to supervise the kids while they played pool or table tennis, which is where me and Carmen met Gary and James; two 18 year-olds from somewhere around Reading. James was gorgeous... he had a six pack! His posh accent! Ah anyway, I can dream...
After that, all the adults buggered off to the pub while I stayed behind with Carmen to mind the kids during the kid's disco, the bingo game and the evening entertainment. While I was there, there was a Cypriot night with Cypriot dancing, cabaret shows, a Battle Of The Sexes game (which ended up with me being forced to join in with the Conga around the swimming pool) and a Mr Atlantica beauty contest (where I was given a lap dance by some drunken Irishman)!
Once that was finished, usually around 11 to 11.30pm, I'd shepherd everyone up to bed and me and my cousin would stay on at the bar for a few drinks, then it was off to bed. The only exception was on Tuesday, my birthday, where we, ahem, consumed rather a large amount of Pina Colada and Sex On The Beach and I ended up attempting to salsa on stage with the equally pissed James. Oh well, if you can't do it on holiday... right?
On our last day, yesterday, Gary and James cajoled us into downing a shot of tequila each with them, to see off our last day in style, but one shot turned into another and another, so when, after a very emotional, teary, 'I'll always remember you Jack... I mean John, err... James' goodbye, we got to the airport and I saw Rachel Stevens at the duty free, I blurted out, 'My God, she's really small isn't she?!!' and she turned around, gave me a filthy look and said, 'I heard that! Don't be so rude!' So I have the dubious honour of being told off by Rachel Stevens! She's prettier in the flesh, but absolutely tiny. She was flying first class to Heathrow with British Airways, if anyone's interested!
Anyway, I'm back home now and absolutely miserable. It's cold, it's dark and it's rainy, when only yesterday I was basking in the sunshine without a care in the world! I woke up this morning and my first thought was that something was very wrong. It took me a few minutes to work out what it was, and you know what? It was because it was so silent! I've become accustomed to hearing crickets chirping 24/7 and it feels horribly quiet without it. I'm having lots of 'this time yesterday I was....' moments and sulking because it's so cold. This time yesterday I was in my bikini, now I'm wrapped up in my thermals. Not fair!
But still, I had a really good time; the best. There's so much to do at the hotel, and I'd really recommend it. The weather is lovely, the people are generally very friendly, and the whole way of life is more relaxed and peaceful. People there aren't as hassled and stressed out as they are in England. I passed a strawberry shop, for God's sake! How could you not fall in love with the place?
I'd go back tomorrow if I could. It's such a beautiful place, and I became really attached to it. I'd definitely recommend it to anybody - if you want a quiet, relaxing holiday or a busy, active one, it's suitable for everybody, and I guarantee that you'll have a really good time. I've done loads of things I've never done before... run across a dual carriageway in a bikini, be the recipient of a lap dance, allow a complete stranger to wear my clothes (only my jeans and flip flops for any of you who are starting to think I'm a brazen tart, lol) in order to win a gameshow, be proposed to, get pissed at 3pm in the afternoon, neck tequila, properly, with the salt and lemon and everything, lol, and be carried and thrown into the pool by a sexy 18 year-old with a six pack! Not bad at all!
You can stay at the hotel through Thomas Cook, Thomson, JMC and Sunset. Brochure prices are in the region of £600-700 per adult for an all-inclusive week in the middle of July, but if you shop around, you can get it cheaper - my mum and dad got it for about £500 per person.
Definitely recommended!
I don't have any pictures specifically of the hotel, so you'll have to make do with some random ones of my family with the hotel in the background! Hope it gives you an idea of what the place is like, anyway!

The Atlantica Bay Hotel, Limassol, CYPRUS (listed as 4 star by Tomson and ONLY available through them in the UK).
Getting There:
We booked through Thomsons where the just over 4 hour flight was part of the whole package. There are two main airports in the Southern part of Cyprus and travelling time is 'roughly' 45 mins. Obviously other airlines fly to Cyprus but cost & times are going to be very varied.
Cost:
Obviously this will vary on many things but, flying from Gatwick last July and coming back one week later with daytime flights, the cost was about £1,300 for 2 of us, staying fully inclusive.
Who its for:
The main user of the hotel is Thomson (Gold holidays). They do not allow under 16's to be booked in, so expect the hotel to be mostly full of adults as this is specifically designed for couples. So, if your ...
Advantages: A well laid out hotel, offering a peacefull and relaxing holiday. Disadvantages: A long way out from the centre of Limassol
We went to Cyprus for the first time last December. We stayed in Limassol at the HotelAtlantica Bay.
My Review on the HotelAtlantica Bay, which is a Thomson Gold property.
The Hotel was excellent, although rather large it was very welcoming, friendly and relaxing, the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful.
The public areas were really well decorated, with lots of marble being used, especially in the lobby leading to the restaurants, which also had a lovely fountain and marble statues lining the walls.
All meals were served buffet style in a large well laid out restaurant. The food was excellent with a great deal of choice for each course, which comprised of starters, hot and cold main courses and desserts.
The pool area was well laid out, with a very large free form swimming pool which was unheated ...
Advantages: close to everything Disadvantages: not a good beach in sight
In the summer of 2002, my family and I went on holiday to Cyprus. This was the first time we had all ventured abroad as prior to this, I was only brave enough to book caravan holiday?s in the New Forest.
With all the kit and caboodle you have to pack with two very young children I still had my doubts right up to the departure lounge.
I have been to Cyprus four times; the last trip was in the summer of 1990, just as the Gulf war kicked off. I remember seeing the island surrounded by the British War ships and kept thinking, ?Was this a good idea??.
For this holiday, I found a perfect hotel on the Internet and booked direct, thus saving quite a bit of money.
It was the AtlanticaHotel in Limassol. The complex was amazing. When we arrived early afternoon, we were welcomed by a cold glass of fresh orange juice and within minutes ...
