What A Load Of Balls...

Advantages: piece of history, easy to get to, looking good outside
Disadvantages: boring , stairs, bad if you're not good with stairs or are disabled, did I mention stairs?

...signposts directing you towards the Atomium, a quick check of the local landscape should give you some indication which way to head. The metro and tram stations are locate next to each other and if you need to get back into Brussels fast, the tram may be your better option. You really can't miss the structure, it sticks out like a sore thumb. After all, who can miss 9 ruddy great big balls suspended in mid air?

The Atomium has undergone ...
...unless you are visiting the Atomium, where you are stuck in a time warp in the 1950s.

The top sphere is split into two levels, the panorama platform where you can slowly walk around and have a good view over Brussels and, on a good day, probably the whole country. The upper level is the restaurant and can be reached by another staircase.

The restaurant is normally self service but on the say we visited it was closed. ... more

'Astonishing Atomium' claim somewhat unfounded

Advantages: great looking building, huge potential...
Disadvantages: ...which sadly is not being realised

...concept and development of the Atomium, but that’s all there is to do. “Ok, fair enough”, I thought, thinking that the observation window was the warm-up for the main exhibition. From the top sphere you have to return to the lift, which takes visitors down to the sphere in the middle. From here, it is basically a walk down through 3 spheres filled with photos and memorabilia from the Expo 58. The condition of the overall structure ...
...the Atomium, and probably Brussels as well, would rise significantly. It will be interesting to go back after the work has been completed, to see if it has become a world class attraction. I hope they succeed, and that is both why and when I recommend others to go. ...

The Atomium renovated in time to turn 50

Advantages: Iconic building, great views, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Not a huge amount to do, lots of steep stairs, surly staff

...showing the construction of the Atomium, although I couldn’t hear any soundtrack, so I don’t know whether this would have been in French, Flemish or English. There was also an exhibition space, currently filled by work by Enrico T Paris, which, according to the blurb, “resemble an extraordinary laboratory that develops via different systems which communicate among themselves and create a completely new poetic environment” - I’m afraid to say that ...
...like a load of brightly coloured plastic and metal. There will be a new exhibition from September for the next six months. The central sphere has a coffee bar which also serves ice cream, which at 2.50 euros for a cornet with 2 scoops was not too pricy considering the location. IMPRESSIONS Positives i) The first impression is of how awe-inspiring the structure is. It is huge, shiny, simple and in many ways beautiful. ii) If you go with children, ...

EASY TO FIND CHEAP- A LITTLE BORING

Advantages: This is a great photo oppertunity and the place looks great from outside
Disadvantages: On the inside it is not so great, and is not very interestng for children

...from the outside, you would expect that such a futuristic looking building would have more futuristic activities. I do not think that it is worth taking children into the Atomium, but some adults (particularly the one who can read French) might enjoy this. For the children, I recommend Mini- Europe. ...

Advantages: close to Grand Place in Brussels, walk by at your leisure, won't cost you anything
Disadvantages: it's teeny tiny, you expect more

Belgium isn't really famous for much. Well, it's got Jean Claude van Damme, Hercule Poirot and Tin Tin, the European Parliament, a large variety of beer and chocolates but that's about it. Then there's its capital city, Brussels, famous for even less - apart from the ill named Brussel sprouts (that have nothing to do with Brussels, just an unfortunate sharing of names). However, even the most uninitiated will know at least a couple of things about Brussels. They have the Atomium, Grand Place (which is really not that grand) and the famous Manneken Pis. The latter is the subject of this review. And, due to the nature of the review, I will be using a splattering of the word wee throughout the review. This subject just begs for its use. Manneken Pis (translated as little man wee) is famous well beyond the boundaries of both Brussels ...

Around Europe in 80 Minutes

Advantages: See Europe in an hour and a bit
Disadvantages: It's not very big...

The Atomium is to Brussels what the Eifel Tower is to Paris, the CN Tower to Toronto, the Gateway Arch to St Louis. No, I don't mean a big useless obelisk, but the city's most famous landmark. It was built in 1958 for the World Expo which was hosted by Brussels that year. It represents a crystal molecule of metal, magnified 165 billion times, with nine electron spheres (each measuring 18m across) which are linked by thick tubes containing walkways and escalators. It has exhibitions and viewing areas inside, as well as a top-floor restaurant. The Atomium dominates an area on the northern fringes of the city called BRUPARCK - a vast park which is home to such attractions as the Planetarium and the Heysel Football Stadium. Then there's the Océade, an aquapark complete with flumes and wave machines, palm trees and sandy beaches ...

why you should use public transport

Advantages: reliable, cheap
Disadvantages: none compared to English transport systems

What can i say about public transport in brussels? Just one word sums it up - excellent. I stayed in a small village called Grimbergen just outside Brussels, it had its own little bus station with a regular service into Brussels North trains station at least every twenty minutes via the Heysel district which made it ideal for visiting both the city centre and the Atomium. It was also much cheaper than buses in the north of England. As Brussels is quite a large city with the sights well spread out I used the underground to get around. This was extremely cheap, made getting from one place to another quick and easy and meant that i wasn't too tired to enjoy a good meal and sample one of the excellent Belgium beers in the evening! I didn't catch a train from Brussels but I have used trains in Belgium, travelling from Antwerp, Brugge ...
