Advantages: new car Disadvantages: service, quality of cars, not cheap, not a quick or easy process, untrained, rude, lying staff
...We got to the Europcar office at around 9pm. We waited about an hour before we got served. We had ordered a "Compact" car which we were told would be a similar size to a Renault Megane. The woman offered us a peugeot 206 which was too small. She spent about 20 minutes trying to convince us a 206 was the same size as a Megane and wasn't an "Economy". When she eventually admitted that the 206 was a smaller car than we'd ordered she said she couldn't give us any kind of refund for taking this car, all she could give us was a complete refund and no car but no other Car Rentals had any cars left until the next day and we needed a car to get to our hotel. We argued a bit more before the woman decided she was going home and disappeared. Another man came along but all he could offer us was a Renault Clio so we took this (it was a little bigger...

Advantages: Relatively good rate Disadvantages: Crap cars, fuel option is very expensive
...I recently rented a class 'C' car at Nimes airport in the south of France for a weekend. This was supposed to be a Renault Megane or similar. Hmmm. A crappy Vauxhall Meriva (a really poor man's mini-MPV) is what I got.
I'm not sure what is was I did in a past life but I'm always getting punished for it now as every time I rent a car from anyone I walays get Vauxhalls/Opels, despite special requests not to - they are crap cars.
Anyway, advice: if you are flying Ryanair to Nimes, use any but Hertz, as everybody uses Hertz and the queues are huge. National, Avis and Europar all operate franchises - and probably don't have Vauxhalls (Opels).
I was also stung for extra fuel at the end. They aske me if I wanted to return it empty. Under pressure from the huge queue I agreed and they charged me a full tank (fine) at 30% above...

Advantages: Cheap, easy to use site Disadvantages: Crap car, not as advertised, old, rude agent (Europa)
...Rule number three of the universe must be you never get the car ordered at an airport.
I was tempted by the CarJet site by the price and the fact that they seemed to be renting cars by make not Class. When travelling with 3 adults and 2 very young children, with plenty of luggage and golf clubs this is important.
My carefully chosen Renault Scenic turned into a Ford Focus CMax, which had 15000kms on it, look tired and would barely fit our luggage. I know from experience that the Scenic has boot in which you could hide a whale behind your cases whereas we had to remove the parcel shelf from the C Max to get the stuff in.
When we asked the office staff (Europa) to hold the parcel shelf for us they refused so it had to be jammed in the back under the passengers feet.
Thanks to CarJet and Europa we had a lousy start to our holliday...
