The airport itself is one of the cleanest, best signed with the most number of shops and facilities I have seen in a long long time.
The airport has been undergoing expansion for several years now, with completion of parts of the project in 1997 and 2001.
When arriving at the airport as an international traveller, unless you have come from Australia then it is likely that you have been on a long haul flight and so the bright, large arrivals area is exactly what you need. The customs and immigration staff are very friendly and genuinly seem pleased to welcome you to their country.
The walk through the airport to baggage reclaim allows you to see the many shops that the airport has to offer, which is always good for planning your return flight, knowing how much time you want to allow in the departure lounges.
The airport has a NZ$30 departure tax half of which goes towards the expansion of the ariport which has to be paid after check-in and before proceeing through password control but there are plenty of staff around to assist with any questions about this or anything else at the airport.
There are plenty of shops and things to do should your flight be delayed.
