Mother´s Day with 16000 HP

Advantages: Racing in the Austrian Alps
Disadvantages: Beware if wet

I´m sure that there will be many mothers who couldn´t care less about F1 racing but this is the advertisement on the official home page of the A1 Ring, venue of coming Sunday´s Austrian Grand Prix. F1 Racing in Austria dates back to the sixties when the event was held at the nearby military airfield of Zeltweg in the province of Styria: in 1964 it bore stoneage conditions when Phil Hill´s car caught fire in the straw(!)bundles that marked the course ...
...airfield. In August 1970 a brand new track was opened and I was among 120000 spectators to watch the Belgian Jackie Ickx win the Grand Prix. Too bad for our star Jochen Rindt who didn´t finish the race, but he went on to become the first world champ posthumous after his tragic accident two weeks later in Monza, Italy... Back then the ultrafast course (253 kmh average!)was called Oesterreichring and races have been held until 1987 before major reconstruction ...

Simple Circuit.

Advantages: Short circuit - interesting overtaking.
Disadvantages: Low grip.

The A1-Ring circuit at Spielberg in Austria has the reputation for being a simple circuit for the drivers, but it often produces some really good races. On this site originally was the famous Osterreichring circuit that produced some classic races but unfortunately was too long for the demands of modern racing and television coverage. In 1997 the new circuit was opened after a £15 million investment. This track is very smooth and the non-abrasive ...
...this results in very low grip so the cars have to have a large amount of downforce which can make the set-up of the cars very difficult. Also there is a fair amount of gradient on the circuit and a couple of uphill corners (especially Castrol Kurve – the first corner) mean that the cars brake very late and this puts extra strain on the cars, particularly the rear suspension. F1 2001 Round 6 Preview And Review

Advantages: Not a bad circuit for overtaking, Good chance of a competitive race, Beautiful track location.
Disadvantages: 2000 race was fairly dull after lap one., Not the most exciting track., No home drivers.

Short but sweet

Advantages: An good race
Disadvantages: on an average track

...and general razamatazz that follows formula One, then Austria draws a sharp contrast to your expectations. The circuit in Spielberg, Austria, known as the A1 ring, is far from being the most exciting place on earth. Despite producing world champions (Jochen Rindt and Nikki Lauda) the fans do not seem to be that interested in Grand Prix racing. The circuit is never sold out.
