Holidaying in the Tyrol

Advantages: Great scenery in the summer
Disadvantages: A long way by coach

I have recently been to Austria on holiday, as a regular traveller I have visited Austria on many occasions during the winter and the summer. During the winter the mountains are amazing and there is some great skiing to be done. But not many people visit Austria during the summer. If you are contemplating taken a summer break there are a number of places to visit and things you you must do while your there. First things first, Places to visit. ...
...it offers too many places of interest to mention, but one way to see all of theses is to take one of the many guided tours around the city, such as the Sound Of Music tour which visits the buildings etc used in the film. Innsbruck. Another huge city, with Horse drawn carriages being the best way to tour this city, with its huge mountains as a backdrop. There is also a train that runs up the side of these mountains and gives you a great veiw over ...

A real Austria town, not just a honey-pot

Advantages: Great high-mileage skiing with Amade liftpass
Disadvantages: Quiet nightlife on non world-cup weeks

We went to Schladming twice already, once in 2001 and again in 2003. The town is in upper Styria (Obersteiermark), but is actually nearer to the well-known resorts of Salzburg (Zell Am See, Abtenau, etc.) than the provincial capital of Steiermark which is Graz in the south. Schlamding (or Schladders as my friends now call it) is about a.5 hours from Salazburg airport, and you can make this journey by train or car, but the best option is the planaibus, ...
...airport direct to the town. This town really has a life outside skiing, ther eis some industry, and numerous businesses unrelated to tourism, so you don't get the contrived feeling that you can in some ski resorts. It's not a typical Austrian village though, it's definitely a town in terms of size and character, although it's by no means big. The skiing is on 4 mountains, the Planai, which is reached fmro the centre of town, the Hochwurzen, where ...

Bad Gastein - At the heart of the Alps

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, good location, cheap in summer
Disadvantages: Quiet nightlife and expensive ski lifts

...easy access by rail to Bad Gastein and into the Gastein Valley in general. I had the pleasure of visiting this resort in the summer, which was financially in my favour as the Euro Youth Hotel, which i stayed in conviently located opposite the Railway Station and inbetween the famous spa, and a spar supermarket, was not only giving free upgrades, but free nights as well, which from my conversations with people seemed evident accross the resort in ...
...what the town has on offer, from summer sports, hiking and relaxing (in the spa) the daytime activities and scenic backdrop were stunning in the heat of the summer day. I would strongly advise visiting this town not only does it have easy access by the main rail route, but also a wealth of activities that other towns/villages in the valley, such a Hofgastein and Dorfgastein lack. A pleasurable stay. ...

Skiing in Obergurgl

Advantages: Snowsure resort
Disadvantages: Not much nightlife

Obergurgl is a resort in the Tirolean Alps of Austria. In winter is quite a picturesque town. The skiing is enjoyable for beginners and also intermediates, there is not very much for advanced skiiers in Obergurgl. There is a new four man gondola which links Obergurgl with Hochgurgl, this is a much welcomed alternative to the free ski bus. The apres-ski seems to start in a mountain restaurant just above Obergurgl called the Nederhutte, this is always ...
...you have to ski down to the village! Another lively place for apres ski is the is the umbrella bar outside the Edleweiss and Gurgl. There is not very much to do after the apres ski and you seem to end up in the quite popular night club at the back of the Edleweiss and Gurgl, however it is more of a bar than a club, but it seems to be the only nightclub in Obergurgl. Obergurgl isn't a very big town and it wouldn't afford much more nightlife. There ...

From the Slopes to the Springs…Bad Kleinkirchheim

Advantages: The Best-Kept Secret In The Alps...!
Disadvantages: None!

I stepped out of the Kaiserburg gondola. The soft humming of the lift mechanics faded as I hoisted up my skis and moved out towards the summit. Above me, the sun shone in a clear and utterly cloudless alpine sky, and around me, in all directions, the Alps were spread out in a massive and spectacular crown of distant rock and ice. I clicked on my skis and glided down onto the powdery summit. There wasn't a soul on the slopes. I skied across to the ...
...hours there, lost in a private reverie, transfixed by the sunshine, the speed and the solitude. I ended up in a little mountain hut near the summit where I had an apple strudel and a sharp little schnapps. I sat out on the veranda with a bevy of suntanned, laughing Austrians, and we exchanged exclamations of wonder at the snow and the skiing and the splendour of it all. Finally, I skied down the face of the mountain, along the famous world cup trail, ...
