Austria Trend Favorita Hotel, Vienna

Advantages: Historic Scenic Clean Friendly Reasonably priced English spoken and understood widely
Disadvantages: German signs a bit tricky for those with only english language

...Vienna is everything the the brochures boast of and more! A short 3 night break in the Austrian capital gave us enough of a taster to want to return for more. When travelling on a budget, Austria is not the first place you think of to visit. Its reputation as an exclusive opulent venue is perhaps offputting for the visitor with limited funds. However by booking flights and accommodation on line we cut down significantly on the costs of getting there. Buzz and Hotels Direct are definite recommendations. The 3 star Harmonie Hotel is situated in the leafy suburbs of Vienna just outside the main Ringstrasse and underground network, but well serviced by regular, clean and cheap trams. This gem of a hotel is clean and comfortable with a friendly staff and generous kitchen. The concierge even helped to organise a special meal for us... Read review

...Do you like fresh air, mountain views, long walks or skiing then this is the place for you. Austria is one of those places which in many ways hasn't changed for years. The locals are friendly (usually) and very hospitable and the food makes an interesting change from your normal English style resorts. Its a great place for interesting soups - you probably would not believe the things they serve up in beef stock. And of course is a great place to get a Wiena Schnitzell (forgive the spelling!) If you don't much fancy mountains and fresh air then there is always the beautiful, historic capital of Vienna.... Read review

...After paying through the nose for the Tube in London, Vienna is a refreshingly cheap place. The Underground network is not that comprehensive, but is on the whole clean and reliable, although there is currently a major overhaul being done, at the expense of the tramways, with the U3 having been extended in both directions in the last three years (it now goes out to Simmering in the East), and the U2 expansion will take it through the Prater, and out to the North East of Vienna, although this is not due for completion until 2008 - just in time for Euro 2008 which Austria will be hosting jointly with Switzerland. The U1 is also going to be extended to the North - taking it out to Leopoldau. The U2 has often been shut at weekends, to allow work on station modification to be carried out, although this is hardly that great a loss... Read review
