Avignon (France)

Avignon (France)

The first time my wife and I visited Avignon, nearly twenty years ago, it wasn't a comfortable experience. We had two small boys in tow and they were “bored of interesting things”, which is to say defiantly resistant to any further educational sight-seeing. I cannot now recall (the memory ... Read review

Of ponts and pontiffs

Advantages: Full of interesting things
Disadvantages: But not to the very young

...

Avignon was home to the papacy for nearly a century, at a time notorious for papal greed and corruption. The church was big business: apart from quasi-legitimate income from tithes and bequests, a spiritual protection racket was in full swing with the sale of pardons and indulgences, plus religious relics and similar trinkets, not to mention back-handers for clerical appointments. As you might expect, the hub of such activities acted ...
...the city’s prosperity. Avignon had been having a thin time of it, having suffered the consequences of backing the wrong side in the Albigensian Crusade, but now the population surged, multiplying tenfold to about 40,000, making it one of the largest cities in Europe at the time. With this came a boom in construction – ecclesiastical, civil and military. Many of the monuments that visitors flock to see today date from this period. Avignon’s importance ... more

Sur le pont d'Avignon....

Advantages: lots to see
Disadvantages: lots to hear

...I have been in Avignon for a week and we came back last Thursday with some regrets..... ... let me tell you so that you don't do the same mistakes.... Avignon is a very interesting city in the Provence, South of France. Famous for the un-repaired bridge and the Pope Palace, Avignon offers culture and lots of restaurants. Hubbie and I like eating - and we spent half a monthly wage and nearly all our time in restaurants. DON'T DO THIS! Hubbie ...
...very interesting graveyard. Avignon has an strange smell - some parts smell like cinnamon, other parts smell like pee. If you like shopping, you like Avignon - but if you are above size 12 - you don't! The French ladies seem to be very very slim (how do they manage this with all the nice food?) and all clothing I liked was size 6-10 (pretty disappointing really). Southampton offers a direct flight to Avignon and taxi from A-Airport to the city is ...

Half a bridge is better than none.

Advantages: Easy to get to as it is on the TGV route.
Disadvantages: Tends to be on the way to somewhere else.

...the river and wetland surrounding Avignon but now there are just 4 left standing. This in itself is worth seeing but add a tour of the Pope's palace, built in the 24th century and the centre of the walled city,a stroll around the gardens followed by a coffee outside one of the many restaraunts around the palace forecourt and you have a day to remember. If, unlike us, you choose the right time to visit, July - August , you could enjoy an Arts Festival ...

In another country

Advantages: "The past is a foreign country..."
Disadvantages: "...they do things differently there." (L P Hartley)

The aspiration to own a second home in France did not originate with the English middle class after the second world war. The idea also appealed to the ecclesiastical dignitaries who peopled the papal court during its sojourn in Avignon in the 14th century. At the time Avignon was not part of France. Even before its purchase by the papacy, it fell within the boundaries of the County of Provence, which then owed its allegiance not to France, but to the Holy Roman Empire. Notoriously, this was neither holy nor Roman nor even an empire ? more of a loose association of mainly Germanic principalities. The hold of its rulers on its extremities was often flimsy, so there was nothing much to stop the more headstrong French kings crossing the Rhone and knocking places like Avignon about a bit. Occasionally, when the Rhone flooded ...

Bon marché

Advantages: Thriving, attractive food market
Disadvantages: Not quite as thriving or attractive as it once was

successively rebuilt in stone in the 18th Century, in metal and glass in the 19th (a beautiful Second Empire structure that is much missed - see pic below) and in concrete in the 20th. The last version was an egregious example of postwar brutalism ("une bêtise en béton" - a concrete clanger) and masking its ugly countenance in greenery was the most charitable thing that could have been done for it. The market within What most matters in a market, of course, is not how it looks from the outside, but what's on sale within. Although apparently much more diversified in the past, Avignon's Halles today are almost entirely devoted to food. And very fine food it mostly is. Whereas in Britain markets have a reputation for erring on the "cheap and cheerful" side and are not known for their quality, they have evolved very differently in France ...

Using the Eurostar to travel to France

Advantages: Quick journey times, comfortable, excellent customer service, internet booking
Disadvantages: the pricing system

I have used Eurostar several times to travel into France. Overall I would absolutely recommend travelling by Eurostar to visit France, whether for a short weekend break, a business trip or a longer holiday. It is a quick and comfortable way of travelling and although perhaps slightly longer than an equivalent flight, if you add on the time it takes to check in and pick up baggage the other end in an Airport, the Eurostar compares very well with flying with regards to time. Also, if you are in any way scared of flying (which I am!) it is a great alternative to having to board a plane, and is a lovely stress-free way to travel. I have used Eurostar to travel to Paris, Lille and Avignon and each time have been impressed with the speed, comfort and customer service. You can get to Lille in just 1 hour 45 minutes from London Waterloo ...
