Advantages: Full of interesting things Disadvantages: But not to the very young
République is Avignon?s equivalent of Oxford Street, albeit on a mercifully much smaller scale, and that the pedestrianised area between it and the Halles has many small boutiquey shops selling clothes, curios, ornaments, books and the like. The Halles ? the municipal covered market ? is an excellent example of its kind, and as such may form the subject of a separate review.
Where to stay
There are any number of places to stay in Avignon, from plushy hotels in the traditional French style around the Place de l?Horloge to modern monstrosities on the outskirts. Smaller simpler hostelries are dotted around all over town. We stayed at a chambres d'hôtes called Le Clos du Rempart down a quiet backstreet in the shadow of the city walls. at the Palace of the Popes!
Don't eat all the time - save some of your day to see the interesting culture (most museums have free entry on Saturdays).
We stayed at a nice hotel on the Place L'horlonge - only a 3 minutes walk away from the Palace and we thought it was just a tourist-attraction - some old house with some statues. So we didn't bother to have a further look. Instead we ate froglegs, squids, mussels, cheese, tarts....etc.etc. and we drank incredible cheap but nice red wine each day. Don't get me wrong, the food was great, but we missed out so much.
In front of the Palace of the Popes is a long car that looks like a train. You pay 7 Euro each and you get driven to all the nice places in Avignon. The drive takes 40 minutes and we did it on our departure day because we just couldn't eat anymore and we needed to kill an hour.

As anyone who has read my early reviews knows- I love Italy! I've been going there now for the past ten years with my parents, and for the first time last year I made my own way there with the boyfriend for a nice Italian holiday. The GrandHotel Excelsior was my residence for numerous weeks holiday, and it certainly not one for the faint hearted! In the Thompson guide book it is described as 'quaint' which to put it politely is rather an understatement. One thing that can be said for it is it is completely oozing with Italian charm.
ARRIVAL/ LOCATION
If you book with Thompson as we did (though other tour operators go to the same location) flights go from Manchester Airport on a Friday morning, taking just over 2 and a half hours to get to Naples International Airport. From Naples the coastal resort of Amalfi is approximately ...
