At some time in our lives, we find ourselves in the situation of having our car off the road, and needing to hire a car. Some of us maybe want to hire for other reasons. How do you know which hire company to choose? There are so many out there, which claims to be good. Well I want to tell you about AVIS who are one the worlds leading car rental companies; they have been around for many years. I will be honest with you and admit that they are one of the more expensive ones, but the company has an excellent record of customer satisfaction. You are wondering how I know this well, I actually worked for them for 14 years in the customer service head quarters, and only left due to moving house 16 months ago.
Avis have a wide range of new vehicles available for hire; they sell them normally after only six months, so you can be sure that you will not be getting any old banger. The general public can purchase the cars at a reasonable price.Avis operate a no smoking policy in all their cars.Avis often have special deals on weekend hires, which are well worth it. Avis have so
many different rates, which apply on different types of rental. The best way to check what is on offer is to visit their web-site, which is a very straight forward to use, and it gives you the actual price for what you are looking for, and shows if there are any surcharges that have to be taken into account. There are no hidden costs; like with some companies that I won’t name.
You have to be 23 years old to hire any vehicle, but if you want a luxury one then you have to be over 30 years. You will need to present 2 forms of I.D at the location when you pick the car up, one must have a photo, e.g. passport, or new driving license. You can pay buy American Express, Dinners Club, Eurocard, Master card, Visa at the end of your hire. You can pay buy cash by prepayment of the estimated rental charges plus 20%; However, no cash will be accepted for payment on H car groups and above. If you make a reservation and do not cancel giving 48 hours notice then you will be charged £50 or if you fail to turn up then a £50 no- show fee is applicable. If you book on line then the no-show fee is exempt. Avis offer special one-way rentals and unlimited mileage, which is a bonus.
AN EXAMPLE OF COST FOR GROUP C CAR FOR THREE DAYS
The total cost would be £288.60 this includes CDW (collision damage wavier insurance) and T/P (Theft protection insurance. This could be cheaper as this rate was based on hire from Heathrow airport, where a £17 fee is applicable. This charge is made on all hires from airport locations and some down town offices.
As I mentioned before all rates are different, and some of the insurance’s are included and some are not. CDW- can cost between £9.95 & £23.05 per day depending on the car group, if it is not taken out then if the car is damaged, you are liable for up to the total cost of the vehicle plus the loss of use. The CDW reduces liability to between £550 - £750 depending on the car group.
T/P – costs between £5.50 and £7.35 per day and the same liability reduction amount apply as above.
PAI (Personal accident insurance) which costs £4.75 per day and provides cover for accidental death, injury and medical expenses for renter and the passengers.
RFL – Vehicle registration fee charged at 95p per day.
All vehicles should be provided with a full tank of petrol, and you must return the car the same, or you will be charged at a very high fuel bill. Always check the fuel gaugereading before driving away and if its not full go back into the office, so that a note can be entered on to the rental agreement. This happened to me once when I rented a car for my holiday, but had the advantage on knowing to check first. Another thing is to always check that the car is not damaged, even small scratches should be reported, before you drive off or you could face a repair bill. It does happen so do be careful. The cars are usually in very good condition and are cleaned and checked after every hire, occasionally one may slip through the net. Avis does have a breakdown recovery service, incase you need it, and will provide another vehicle for you to use if the car cannot be fixed at the roadside. I have found the staff to be very friendly and are customer focused. They will go out of their way to help and solve any problems that may occur. I certainly would recommend them for reliability, service, and good quality vehicles. Check out their web site www.avis.co.uk for locations and rates.
I hope that you have found this information useful and feel free to leave any comments

I misread the title - I thought it said 'rent a wreck' - good op - although this sounds mighty pricey - even if we subtract the £17 for the Heathrow charge.
