I recently hired a car for 4 days from Avis from their Dublin, Ireland, city centre location. I found the Avis website pleasant to navigate and I was not asked for any unreasonable or excessive information. The car selection and availability was good, especially given my short notice and the fact that it's peak season.
To Avis's credit they did not charge me any surcharges for renting from a city centre location - people should be alert when hiring a car in Dublin as of some of Avis's big name competitors are charging a 25euro surcharge for hiring anywhere in Dublin city.
Location and shop - The Avis city centre location in Dublin is close to the city centre which was ideal for me. The shop layout was spacious and there were plenty of staff on hand to serve me almost straight away. The lady who dealt with me was polite, knowledgeable and efficient. I was on the road within 15 minutes of getting out of the taxi.
The car I received was as described (mid size hatchback), was brand new (only 15km on the clock) and was a well regarded make (Toyota). I was offered additional insurance and was given an honest and clear description of what it covered, I took it as it was Friday 13th when I hired the car! I'd advise people to make their own minds up on the additional insurance as it can be expensive.
On returning the car I was served almost straight away by an efficient and friendly young man who inspected the car and issued a receipt. The only thing I would caution people about is the fuel - when I hired the car it had only 3/8 of a tank of fuel, when I left the rental location this dropped to 2/8 within a mile! (electronic fuel gauges are a curse when hiring a car as you get hit for 1/8 of a tank of fuel if you hire the car just when the gauge is about to change). On returning the car I had 3/8 (actually almost 4/8) of fuel in it, but even so Avis tried to charge me 12euro for fuel - when I explained that this was wrong they very quickly waived the 12euro. In my experience it is always best to hire a car with a full tank of fuel then you can just fill it up and leave it back and there is no room for confusion.
Overall I would definitely recommend the Dublin city centre Avis branch. Just be careful about the fuel - maybe use your mobile phone to take a picture of the fuel reading when you hire the car. I know this has no official use but if anyone tries to charge you for fuel then it shows that you know what you are at.
