I booked a car on supercheapcar.com and it should have cost me $129 dollars for 2 days. I ended up not being able to rent a car. Here's what happened.
Avis are crap. Never again. I'll put each seperate mess up they had in a time line so you don't have to digest all of it at once, as I did.
11:15am I get there, after my flight and have to wait 15-20 minutes to get service. That was fine.
11:35am I get to the desk the man tells me I am unable to pay the car due to there policies of same name driver/card holder. (this was my fault, I had no idea they had that policy and had booked the car with my fathers' card). Again that was fine. I had a check card with BofA so he took that and my drivers licence. Clerk: "I'm sorry, we need to hold a deposit of 400 dollars due to our under 25 policy." Cash which I had on me but not in my account.. but they don't accept cash, so I had to deposit this cash into an atm which took me 20 minutes.
11:55am I get back and now there are a couple and a man in front of me. So I had to wait a further 20 minutes. Not irritated yet, my fault.. but getting there.
12:15pm Clerk: "Back again, ok lets get you in that car" After about 20 minutes of messing about on his computer, moving cars and trying to cut deals with me. It comes to this...
12:35pm Clerk: "Sorry sir, you cannot use your check card, it is against our policy to allow under 25 year olds to use check cards." ****... YOU ROBOT?? I didn't obviously say that but I was angry at this point because I just wanted to get a car and get out of there.
So basically my policy didn't mean jack I wasted my time and all and all just got ticked off. I get him to call other companies and after 10 mins he finds someone, who will match my policy or thereabouts, and sends me to national car rental.
1:00pm I arrive in national car rental, and speak to a lady behind a counter, I tell her that I was sent by Avis and she blanks me, completely bewildered by what I have said. At this point I'm in a rush, so I don't even try to explain I just ask her did she get a call from Avis and is there anyone else working who might have, and she just stares at me, like... like a robot?
1:15pm I call Avis car rental... and low and behold the male clerk has been replaced by a female clerk. So here I am stuck in this void. No car, back at square one. It was like I just got off the plane, except now I was disgruntled and angry. As most people would be at this point I was angry, and not very nice to talk to. So National couldn't give me a policy and I had to call my friends to tell them I wouldn't make it, thereby missing out on my business with them.
1:35pm After a cigarette or three, fresh air and some screaming and cussing I had calmed down, went into Enterprise and got a car from them within 10 minutes.
So please. If your renting a car don't go near those unhelpful morons at Avis, do yourself a favour and get someone to collect you.

Looks like you've had a pretty bad experience with Avis... I booked a car online through Cardelmar.com with Avis, paid upfront online and had no problems with collecting the car (it took me 5 min) from getting to the airport. I was late to pick up the car (my fault) and late again to return the car by 1 hour (not my fault). But they were great - didn't charge me anything, didn't take a deposit. Maybe you had problems because you're under 25 but most companies will give you problems with that. Give Avis another chance - they're not as bad as you think.
