Rock around the clock.

Advantages: unique, awe inspiring, mystical
Disadvantages: remote and expensive to get to

Ayers Rock (or Uluru to give it it's Aboriginal name) is a place that you are unlikely to go for an extended stay. It is a place where you will stop off at on your travels around Australia or, like us, a quick flight in and out with an overnight stay.

When you shut your eyes and think about Australia some people will visualize The Opera House, others will see The Great Barrier Reef but many will see the burnt orange glow of Uluru ...
...and cultural values. Uluru is Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta are known as The Olgas and about 30 kms West of Uluru and can be seen from Uluru. The rock rises around 1100 feet and can be seen for many miles and at first view is simply awe inspiring.

***where is it?***

Based in the Northern Territory of Australia, the nearest large town, Alice Springs is around 200 miles to the North East. If you imagine a map of Australia ... more

ULURU - THE SACRED ROCK

Advantages: Unforgettable Experience
Disadvantages: The Heat and Flies

Uluru, or Ayers Rock as it is more commonly known, is located in Australia's Northern Territory, 450km (280 miles) southwest of Alice Springs. It is the world's largest monolith standing and incredible 348 metres high, 4Km long, 2.4Km wide and 8Km around the base. The total surface area covers 485.6Ha. Uluru was formed approximately 600 million years ago when much of central Australia was under the sea. At some point, the sea floor was thrust upwards ...
...1873. He named it Ayers Rock after Sir Henry Ayers, the then Chief Secretary of Australia. William Gosse was also the first European to climb the rock. Uluru was declared a National Park in 1958 and was returned to the Aborigine people in 1985. With the first organised tours starting in the 1950's, many thousands of tourists have followed in Gosse's footsteps and climbed the rock, with many more continuing to do so each year. However, the Anangu ...

Ayers Rock!!

Advantages: Magical, once ina life time experience, must see!
Disadvantages: Heat

Ayers Rock is roughly in the centre of Australia, having visited it in 2001, it is a once in a life time experience. We actually went to Australia for three weeks, we stayed with family for a week and a half and then travelled the rest. I would say if your going that far you have to at least see some of the amazing sights!! Though when we told our nieghbour where we were going and that we were visiting Ayers Rock their response was ''A bloody long ...
...*Getting there* Ayers Rock is literally in the middle of know where. The easiest way to get there is (This is how we got there!) by plane. The nearest airport is Alice Springs and the trip lasts about 50minutes. If your not a keen flyer then brace yourselves as the actual airport at Alice Springs is small but at Ayers Rock is tiny and doesn't have room for large planes. We went on a 16 seater which meant I spent the whole time watching the propellers ...

Ayers Rock Resort

Advantages: Stunning scenery
Disadvantages: Expensive, lots of flies

Ayers Rock is situatated in the Northern Terrirtories State of Australia. It's also one of Australia's most important World Heritage locations. It is owned by the Aboriginial people, (have lived in this region for 30,000 years) who live off site from the resort in a small town nearer Ayers Rock or the local name Uluru. The Olgas also nearby, a group of 36 large domes, locally named Kata-Tjuta, which means 'Many Heads' If you want to visit up close, ...
...the resort there is the Ayers Rock Resort Campground, the Outback Pioneer Hotel and Lodge, the Desert Gardens Hotel, the Visitors Centre, Sails in The Desert Hotel, The Lost Camel Hotel, Emu Walk Apartments and the shopping centre. We stayed at the Outback Pioneer Hotel and Lodge, I chose here because it was the cheapest, although we paid £250 for 3 nights, and me and my boyfriend had 2 bunkbeds! There was a mix up with our rooms, but luckily it ...

Advantages: Has to be seen. It's like a big red lump of magic.
Disadvantages: Well, it's a long way. Wherever you're coming from...

...mine! (It's the back of Ayers Rock, the less well known side). I thought it was unfair that such a cool place didn't have a proper photo, and thanks Ciao team for sorting it out. We spent seven months in Australia, which obviously isn't going to fit in one op, so I thought I'd start at the very pinnacle of our Oz experience. Although it isn’t the easiest place to get to, Ayers Rock has to be one of the most magical places I have ever visited. ...
...Ayers Rock was “discovered” by the a Victorian explorer who somehow managed to get back and tell people about it, unlike the majority of other explorers who wound up just another pile of dessicated bones in the landscape while looking for a route from south to north, or even more implausibly trying to find the “inland sea” which was fabled to exist until people finally cottoned on to the fact it was all a big fat lie. About ...

A breath of fresh Ayers! (Uluru)

Advantages: Mystical, amazing, heart of Australia
Disadvantages: Can be a bit 'touristy', miles away from anywhere

...and just camp next to Ayers Rock but nowadays visitors stay in Yularu or Ayers Rock resort which is about 14km away from Ayers Rock. There is also an entrance to the park which means nobody can stay within the park itself overnight. The opening hours of the park change but take into account the times of sunrise and sunset so you can always watch them in the park. A pass into the park costs just under $30 (12 pounds) for 3 days but this is the minimum ...
...3 day pass). In Ayers Rock resort there is a Visitor Centre which contains any information you might want on the area, and also on the sunrise and sunset times so you don't miss them! The resort also has an airport now so you can access the rock resort without having to travel from Alice Springs. ***Uluru (Ayers Rock)*** Ayers Rock stands 340m above the ground, although it is believed two thirds of it are buried underground. There is a 9.6km walk ...

What more could you want?

Advantages: Everything you want
Disadvantages: A long way away

I travelled around Australia for 9 months in 1999 and the most striking feature of the country is the sheer diversity of it's environment and cultures. Everything you could want in a tourist destination is there. From perfect white sand beaches to tropical rainforest and big exciting cities, Australia has the lot. My highlights were Ayers Rock, Cape Tribulation and Fraser Island. The outback town of Coober Pedy is not to be missed also! Accommodation for travellers is easy to find and living costs are much cheaper then Britain. Great for Backpacking!! ...

Kangeroo Island Paradise found

Advantages: Unique untouched country
Disadvantages: none really, ok no good for shopping ;-)

Today I take you to maybe the most beautiful place in the world! Kangeroo Island is a Island off the coast of Adalaide in South Australia. In the 18 hundreds it was James Cook who was the first white man to visit this magnificent Island. An until today it is still a very remote Island. ITS UNIQUE LANDSCAPE Kangeroo Island is because of its setting far away of the main Tourist Attractions of Australia (Ayers Rock, Cairns, Sydney, …) still very untouched. Only 1/3 of the road system is sealed road. And this only happened in the past 3 years, when the main highway in the south was finished. Travelling on the unsealed roads with its red soil is still a great experience for us Europeans even if it gets pretty rough some times! ITS UNIQUE WILDLIFE The most spectacular thing about Kangeroo Island mind you is of course ...

Wreck Divers go Deeper for Longer

Advantages: A myriad of sea life surrounding a fascinating wreck
Disadvantages: It's popularity and price

When planning and preparing for the Australian leg of my recent journey, (much of which took place on the outward flight after more than one complimentary beverage), there were two things that were indelibly marked in my thoughts as quintessential experiences of the great land Down Under and, as such, were inked into my itinerary, (or would have been had I been organised enough to make one). The first and probably the greatest tourist draw for Australia was Uluru, more commonly known as Ayer?s Rock, and as unmissable places to visit go it pretty much takes the biscuit? the cake, well actually the whole damn picnic. That, though, is not the subject matter of this opinion nor obscurely enough is the second place that I felt compelled to see, The Great Barrier Reef, although it is intricately linked. My last month in Australia was ...
