I'd never been to Cyprus before I went there last year, 1999. People had said how beautiful the island was and how fiendly the people are - and they are spot on.
We stayed in the resort of Protaras over on the East of the island. Fig Tree Bay is an area on the edge of the resort blessed with beautiful stetches of white sand, but also having a tree lined hinterland and plenty of areas to walk through and discover.
The resort itself, though not the biggest on the island, has plenty going for it. A variety of styles of food to choose from - Traditional British fare, Fish & Chips, Pizza, Burgers etc, but better quality in Restaurants catering for french cuisine, Chinese, Mexican, Thai and Indian. Plus the odd Greek style Taverna or ten!
Nearby - about 10 km away is the 'happening' resort of Ayia Napa. Full of tourists looking for nighlife. Don't get me wrong, Protaras itself has plenty of bars, a couple of discos and enough places to 'let you hair down' - but Ayia Napa is for the 'clubbers'. The place livens up, just when us oldies are thinking of 'calling it a night. The old town square is the starting point and steps lead you up to the Bars, clubs and Discos - all with their own PRs outside trying to tempt you in.The resort also has a great main beach and a variety of restaurants.
We did go on a trip to the Troodos Mountains while we were on Cyprus. I must say this was disappointing. I think in winter, maybe, when they are snow capped they may be picturesque, but they did nothing for me - and that's coming from a professional photographer who is paid to see the 'pretty' in things.
I'd love to go back again and explore the westerly side of the island, Paphos and the ancient ruins sound good. Maybe another year, because I'd certainly be looking forward to another visit to this largely charming and very British island

Jesus Keith I wrote my opinion on Ayia Napa before I visited the page and see you've only got 4 reads I should have saved myself the time and bother. Cheers ....Peter
