It refers to the loud cries with which he was worshipped at the Bacchanalia, which were exhaustive celebrations in his honour. These events, which supposedly originated in spring nature festivals, became occasions for licentiousness and intoxication, at which the celebrants danced, drank, and generally debauched themselves.
Thankfully, this is not the case in the city centre student and gay friendly bar of the same name! What you should expect is a small but busy drinkery, which is decorated in a simplistic modern style. The clientele generally come from nearby University of Strathclyde, and caters as a pre-club venue to predominantly-gay club Bennett's next door. The range of drinks is fair, but by no means extensive, with both imported and local (Tennent's, etc) available on tap. There is a limited range of wines, which are reasonably priced (~£2 a pint), but don't expect miracles! The atmosphere is good, with such a mixed young crowd and prices are city-centre student budget friendly. The music is not too loud, nor too extreme - typically 70's through to present day pop.
Additionally, food is served from 12-7 every day. Usual pub grub, such as sandwiches and baguettes feature heavily, but other dishes such as pasta are available at good prices (~£5 for medium sized portion). The food is nothing spectacular, but is on par with comparable bars. Large functions can also be catered for in the downstairs area, although this is only open Friday and Saturday to all-comers.

Bacchus is like an oasis in the middle of Birmingham, and once inside you won't belive you're only a minutes walk from the crowded Bullring Shopping centre.
The venue is good for a variety of purposes; a lunchtime coffee; dinner, after work drinks, or a cosy date...all are catered for here.
A good selection of wines and beers on draft, as well as an excellent selection of hot drinks is accompanied by a varied menu offering traditional food, as well as some dishes with a twist.
The atmosphere here is created firstly by the surroundings, undergroud and windowless, the bar still feels airy and luxorious. Music plays quietly in the background, permitting conversation without a need to raise your voice.
Try Bacchus, situated in the Burlington Arcade off New Street, you won't be disappointed. ...

Its Friday night, I?ve had a rubbish day at work (nothing new there) and am in need of a good night out. My partner suggests we go to Bacchus (its actually where we went on our first date aaahhhhh).
Bacchus is situated in the middle of Birmingham City centre, in the Burlington arcade on New Street (its about a 1 minute walk from New street train station). Actually Bacchus is underneath the arcade so unless you know its there you wont find it.
There is a staircase in the arcade, which you follow down to a glass door where you are greeted by a pair of bouncers. Not your typical ?one wrong look and I?ll hit you? bouncers, but smartly dressed and pleasant (occasionally there is a female bouncer).
Bacchus is the Greek god of wine (and fertility) and there is a large paining of him on the wall above the stairs.

Bacchus Bar is situated in the centre of Birmingham on New street, which is one of Birmingham's main shopping streets. It can be found in Burlington arcade just off the street. As you go down the stairs you are instantly sent back in time. It has several themes including medieval, egyptian and traditional English decor. It's arched brick roof is very impressive, so too are the furnishings. Where ever you sit you will enjoy the whole atmosphere of your surroundings as you weave in and out of the various sections and walkways. It is positioned underground which adds to the feeling of passing through a time barrier and leaving the 21st century behind.
The prices are reasonable for a city centre bar and there is a good choice of food on offer.
The dress code for the day is relaxed in general but smarter dress is required for the evening ...
