Five-star Balmoral Hotel combines the noble character of a Scottish baronial home and the classic sophistication of an international hotel. The hotel is one of the most luxurious...
more...hotels in Scotland, is in the heart of Edinburgh, close to the shops, next to Edinburgh central railway station and 20 minutes by car from Edinburgh Airport. For a century, this hotel and its soaring clock tower have dominated Princes Street. In addition to the central location, an eclectic mix of today's minimalism and yesteryear's opulence appeals to both business and leisure guests. Original brass candelabras, fluted columns, and a marble fireplace set a traditional back-drop for modern unframed canvasses and orchids in steel vases. Kilted doorstaff and bagpipers add to the Scottish atmosphere. It provides the ideal accommodation from which to enjoy the many events held in Edinburgh, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, or simply to relax and unwind. Balmoral Hotel is also home to a variety of bar\\\'s and restaurants, which are guaranteed to offer something for every occasion.

On Saturday 17th October 1998, I walked down the aisle and Married my hubby. It was the happiest day of my life at that point. We had our reception in a hotel down Leith and then left the reception to go away and have a lovely night together.

We got in the taxi and I still did not know where we were going. It wasn't long before the taxi had arrived outside the Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street.

This hotel is No1 Princes Street! The very first hotel you come to at the East End of Princes Street. It is a very posh exclusive hotel which I never guessed I would spend my wedding night in.

Hubby is a plumber/gas engineer and has done a lot of work in this hotel and decided this was the place to stay.

He had asked for a specific suite over looking Edinburgh Castle, but it was not available so we ended up in room 349/350 which was a suite which overlooked the East End of Princes Street and Waterloo Place.

We went in one door and I could not believe that it was a sitting room. The TV was on in the sitting room too. The message read 'Welcome Mr and Mrs D Carlisle!' My heart just melted. I went for a wander.

I found a cupboard that turned out to be a shower. It was down the hallway which linked the sitting area to the bedroom. The bedroom had the BIGGEST bed I had ever seen. Then just off the bedroom was a very old fashioned bathroom. Not something I would normally choose but it was wonderful.

We realised we were starving and ordered a New York Club Sandwich. It arrived and it wasn't very filling. It cost £10.95 Just typical for a posh hotel. But we were excited all the same.

We'll miss out what happened next.

When I woke up in the morning, I expected my new hubby to be lying next to me. Where the hell was he? Well this big bed had resulted in us being miles apart from one another. He was at one side while I was at the other.

We woke a lot earlier than planned and had pre ordered brekkie to be delivered. We decided we were ravenous and phoned down to see if it could arrive quicker. It arrived. OH WOW!!!! It came on a trolley which turned in to a table. It was wonderful.

I had half a melon filled with lots of fruit. Then a full scottish breakfast of sausage, bacon, black pudding, potato scone. You name it, it was there. My new hubby had everything going as well! At £17 for breakfast each of course were were going to make the most of it!

I decided to raid the mini bar and as a Souvenier I took home a jar of Jelly Beans at £7.99!

Before long it was time to go home. The room cost us £335 for the night. WOW! For our wedding night it was worth it though. Both sets of parents arrived and had a nosy at the room before we headed off to collect all our pressies and head home!

The hotel apparently does have a health club and hairdresser. It also has a bar and a few restaurants but we didn't visit these!

If I was coming to Edinburgh on Holiday, I wouldn't stay here as there are plenty of places to stay that are far more reasonable but for a special occassion, it is worth it!
