Advantages: Usually hot country, cheap to visit Disadvantages: Very poor standards nothing to do, poor food
In September 2004, my husband and I went on holiday to Barcelo Naiboa Caribe BeachResort on the south coast of Dominican Republic. The complex wasn't cracking, but it's the company that can make a holiday fun!
THE RESORT
We arrived at the hotel in the dark, after a 5 hour bus journey. The travel company told us it would be 2 ½ hrs. So, by the time we arrived we were pretty fed up. My first impressions of the organisation of the hotel "was chaos". 8 couples got of the rickety bus, to check in and it took the receptionist a further hour to get us all checked in. they'd lost registration details, couldn't find some keys (great security) and someone's luggage had gone missing between the airport and the hotel! Great start.
Next morning we got to look around. It's quite a basic hotel; but that didn't bother us. We both work in hotels ...
Advantages: On the beach, good access for disabled travellers Disadvantages: Quiet location, not much in way of local shops
and the children will be delighted to receive them.
There aren't a lot of shops near the hotel - turning right out of Reception and a 5 minute walk will bring you to a small supermarket and gift shop, along with a couple of bars, and a 10 minute stroll towards the left along the beach (20 minutes if you go by the main road) will bring you to a few more shops and a couple of restaurants and bars - if you want a shopping excursion go into SanPedrodeMacoris or further afield into Santo Domingo itself.
I know I've deviated slightly from the hotel, but I wanted to give you my honest opinion of the hotel and surrounding area - if you go expecting 5* luxury from a 3* hotel you may be disappointed, but all in all it's excellent value for money. Advantages: friendly people, rooms, pools, public areas very well looked after, different themes everyday Disadvantages: food variation... but what was out was tasty!
. Unfortunately as stunning as the beach was, it was filled with beach sellers everyday so no sunbeds or relaxing down there! The complex also had a group of monkeys running around which were so funny and were great fun to watch... just make sure you close your balcony door when you go out!!!
Animation were very good, all different activites throughout the day although did leave you alone if you wernt interested. However if you take part you will get colored beads that you can swap in the gift shop, which is probably one of the cheapest hotels gift shops i have stayed in!
Evening entertainment was not too great, even the caribbean do it better, they do try, but we gave up by the 3nd night and chilled out in the bar.
They also do different tours every day to local attractions which look good, but we didnt do as only there for a short time.
