The Casa Batllo - Possibly Gaudi's finest work

Advantages: One of the best examples of Catalan Modernism
Disadvantages: Very expensive

...the almost impossible to pronounce, Casa Batllo. Earlier in the year I had attended a big industry conference in Barcelona and we'd had the conference 'gala' dinner in the Casa Batllo so I had already had a bit of a look around. Now I wanted to show my husband this little gem and get a bit more time to linger and look around. As I mentioned, the Casa Batllo is on Passeig de Gracia - just a few blocks down the road and on the other side from La Pedrera, ...
...degree of accessibility in the Casa Batllo makes it my favourite of the two. ~A little bit of History~ Gaudi didn't build 43 Passeig de Gracia - in fact there had already been a building there for nearly 30 years before he got his hands on it. The owner in 1900 was a local businessman called Josep Batllo Casanovas (great name, means new house - how appropriate). Originally he wanted the whole building knocked down and rebuilt from scratch but changed ...

Incredibly, the stadium is an absolute dump.

Advantages: Only that you can say that you have been there.
Disadvantages: An awfully out of condition stadium with terrible facilities.

...and interior of The Camp Nou is one of the biggest dumps I have ever been in. I paid good money for the stadium tour and what I found was in my opinion an utter disgrace. (My visit was in July 2008) No working lifts so everyone including old and infirm people had to trudge up about 8 flights of stairs in a grotty, filthy stairwell to get up to the higher vantage point inside the stadium. The whole of the interior, excluding the trophy rooms and probably ...
...what a dump the Camp Nou is given that Barcelona FC are such a great club. Perhaps there is some major updating of the stadium planned or in progress. I would hope so because what I saw was just not fitting in my opinion of one of Europe's top clubs. This review is also posted on www.dooyoo.co.uk under my user name eyedo6789 ...

The one and only Spanish Department Store

Advantages: one-stop-shop
Disadvantages: a bit expensive

El Corte Ingles ( the English Cut) is the only big department store in Spain present in most big cities. Barcelona has got two, one strategically located in the busiest part of the city – Placa Catalunya (7 floors) and the other situated in the main Business and Finance street – Diagonal (5 floors). Compared to UK department stores I would say that El Corte Ingles could be at the same level as John Lewis, although some people might say ...
...these department stores have the same layout: Lower ground floor – Supermarket with a wide selection of top class meats, cheeses, wines, cava, etc Groud floor – Accessories, Cosmetics, Perfumes, Souvenirs… Then upwards, each floor is dedicated to a category only – menswear, womeswear, children, house & garden, sports, electronics etc. Only selected shops have Bridal Department, Holiday Bookings, change of currency, both ...

A peaceful park in the city

Advantages: It's a beautiful place and it's free!
Disadvantages: None

...visit to Barcelona I visited Parc Guell, another place on my 'must visit' list, and a place I did not get to visit when last in Barcelona a year ago. We visited Parc Guell as part of a city tour by coach and spent an hour there, walking around in the hot sunshine, although I must point out that in order to see the entire park, I would advise that visitor's spend at least a morning or afternoon there! Those who have read my previous review will know ...
...Catalan Architect designed Parc Guell after being comissioned by Count Eusebi Guell. Guell was an estate agent entrepreneur, and asked Gaudi to design and create a park with luxury houses for Barcelona's aristocracy. The result was Parc Guell, built in 1900 - 1914. However, as our guide on the coach tour informed us, the housing project failed due to Guell running out of money, and only three houses were built. Gaudi himself lived in one of the houses ...

La Boqueria - Barcelona's Technicolour Market

Advantages: A colouful and compelling sight, pick up some tasty food
Disadvantages: You may not be able to take some of it home

...I recommend a visit to La Boqueria? If you're really passionate about food then definitely. If you're on Las Ramblas anyway, then drop in if you have time. Otherwise I'd say that these days it's perhaps not so exciting. We can buy a lot of this stuff at home, though admittedly, the presentation is not so good and the rather pale and often insipid stuff we buy at home is no match for the tasty produce to be bought here. Nearest Metro station - Liceu ...
