Advantages: Fantastic show, and it's free! Disadvantages: None
...complete without a visit to the fabulous spectacle which is the Magic Fountain. I had first seen the Magic Fountain on TV back in 1992 when Barcelona hosted the Olympics. It is situated not far from the outdoor Olympic Pool and stadium. I can remember being quite impressed by the fountain and thinking it would be nice to actually visit and watch the show. Sixteen years on my wish came true, as myself and my partner were on holiday in Spain and having ... ...the city. We liked it so much we returned again this year. The fountain stands at the foot of the steps leading up to the impressive National Palace, situated high up on Montjuic, and performances take place in the evenings - four times a week in the summer and twice a week in winter. There are around five shows an evening, and they usually begin around 9pm and then every half hour until 11pm. We visited the fountain on a hot summer evening, as part ...
Advantages: Beautiful church, great views of Barcelona below. Disadvantages: None
...to take in some of the sights that we had missed on our last visit. A place I was really looking forward to visiting was Tibidabo Mountain, which is the highest peak in Barcelona at over 500m above sea level. Anyone who visits Barcelona will not fail to notice Tibidabo, and this is due to the imposing church of Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart) which stands at the top of the mountain, and the impressive statue of Jesus Christ on the highest spire of the ... ...and statue on top of the mountain is a fantastic sight. The church is the work of architect Enrique Sagnier, and building commenced in 1902 and took 60 years to build, so it is actually not that old! The church is unusual in that it is built as a church on top of a church. The first tier is brown stone and the top tier is white stone. Steps lead up to the entrance of the church, and standing outside looking up, it looks just as impressive as it does ...
Advantages: An interesting Aquarium with some very good displays Disadvantages: Very pricey
Over the last year or so Jenny and I have visited a number of different Zoos and Aquariums. So it seemed only right that while we were in Barcelona we decided to visit the local aquarium. I've been to Barcelona a few times before and while I had passed the aquarium a few times I'd never actually been in. So this time, on my 4th trip to the area we decided to pay it a visit as most of the attractions near our own resort of Lloret De Mar were closed. ... ...front next to the Port Vell shopping Centre. All of the cities tourist buses stop at the Shopping centre next door making the Aquarium reasonably accessible. If, however you prefer to walk it is approximately 5 minutes from the bottom of Las Ramblas across the Port Vell bridge. There is a coach park right next door where a lot of coach trips to Barcelona park up and a Car park on the other side of the Marina. While it's not particularly well signposted ...
Advantages: Enormous fun Disadvantages: Not cheap, not perfect in bad weather
...day and meeting for dinner. Go Cars were the perfect gap filler.
You may not have heard of Go Cars and that's fair enough because they are very new to Barcelona although they are longer-established in other cities such as Miami, San Diego and San Francisco (though goodness knows how they get up the hills in San Francisco). Go Cars are so new in fact that the locals in Barcelona still find them interesting and amusing and other tourists will treat ... ...a novelty.
What's a Go Car anyway?
Go Cars are little yellow 2-seater buggies based on a moped engine and driven - not surprisingly - like a moped. If you are old enough to remember that classic British design disaster, the Reliant Robin, just imaging one of those (or one of those blue invalid carriages you used to see). Cut the top off, paint it yellow and give it a super-whizzy GPS system and you are halfway to imagining a Go Car. The GPS ...
Advantages: Great architecture, well worth seeing. Disadvantages: Expect to queue to get entry
...and one of them was Casa Mila or La Pedrera as it is otherwise known, this Gaudi designed building is now a World Heritage site and is most famous for the quite spectacular roof that it boasts however there is more to it than just that although to be honest the roof alone justifies the entry fee in my opinion and if you are visiting Barcelona I would definitely recommend it as a suitable place to visit for all the family as my children really enjoyed ... ...Getting There and Admission
Casa Mila is located on the corner of Passeig de Gracia and Provenca in the Eixample district of Barcelona. The nearest metro station is Diagonal on metro line 3 and the house is right opposite one of the metro exits. Being a main through fare there are also a number of bus routes that can be used however we found the metro to be the fastest and easiest to work out on our trip.
Entry cost was 7 euro each which was not ...
