Tryp Apolo, Barcelona (August 2006) Advantages: Easy access to Montjuic, La Rambla and the metro system Disadvantages: Some rooms face onto the main Avenue Paral-lel I booked this hotel through AirMiles and paid for a suite upgrade locally. This hotel has a poor write up elsewhere we were prepared to change hotels but my our experience was much better than anticipated. All staff were polite, helpful and spoke good English. We had the suite on the 4th floor furthest from the lifts, facing the inner courtyard and heard little street noise: only the occassional emergency services siren. Each of the two rooms had ... ...split matresses, which my wife always appreciates. The bed linen was changed several times during our short stay. There was a single en-suite bathroom with the usual porcelain plus a bidet. All was very clean, although a little wear was showing in places. Despite being on the fourth floor the shower-over-bath had good water pressure with hot water delivered quickly. The Princesa Sofia Advantages: Very close to the metro station Disadvantages: the bar is expensive ...night for free. The hotel is very close to the Maria Cristina metro station from where you can take the underground to see all the sights of Barcelona. A T10 ticket is the best value allowing 10 journeys for the price of only 6. The hotel itself was very clean and the facilities were execellent. It has a swimming pool, gym, spa and loads of salons. A word of warning though, if you book over the internet and get a cheap deal, it is unlikely that ... ...a bottle of beer. This can be purchased just across the street for 2.25 euro. I must however the hotel is brilliant and the service is first class. Freddie Mercury lives on! Advantages: Nicely furnished, good price, good breakfast Disadvantages: A little way fron the main tourist attractions I stayed at this hotel about 5 years ago and it had recently been refurbished. It is tucked away down a side road but that meant that it was quiet and peaceful. The rooms were large, clean and very nicely decorated with two double beds, good air conditioning and double glazing (making a cool haven tyo retreat to in a very hot city)), good quality soft furnishings, lovely bathrooms and plenty of nice toiletries. The staff were friendly and the breakfasts ... ...well as cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cheese and hams, breads, pastries, cakes, fruit juices and champagne. We really didn't need lunch after such a good spread for breakfast! The hotel is not in the 'centre' of Barcelona as such but it is just a couple of hundred yards from a metro station and even closer to Barcelona's Magic Fountains (think Queen and the Barcelona Olympics). City and Seaside - best of both worlds Advantages: Position, Facilities, Service (mostly) Disadvantages: Could be too far from City Centre for some ...heard positive views of the AC Barcelona so decided to book here. ~~Booking~~ I booked through Hotelopia as they were offering the best deal which worked out at £317 for a 3 night weekend stay in September. I don't think this is too bad for a 4 star hotel although, as seems to be typical for Spanish city hotels, this doesn't include breakfast. There was an option available to include breakfast but at around £100 more, we decided go for room only ... ...I'm also not averse to trying another AC Hotel which are mainly situated in Spain and Northern Italy, with a couple in Portugal. Hotel Arts Barcelona Advantages: Ideally located on the sea front and boasts pure oppulence Disadvantages: Most popular hotel in Barcelona and availability can be difficult to secure ...considered to be one of the best hotels - if not, the bes hotel - in Europe. It's modern contemporary style boasts pure elegance from the moment you step inside, particularly on entry to the first floor reception, which steps out onto a beautiful lawn, overlooking the sea, under the shadow of a large copper moument, which I do believe represents a fish.
