Guru Bar, Barcelona an esoteric chill out zone
Advantages: A must visit chill out zone in the heart of Barcelona Disadvantages: Its not in London
...and should have been.
Guru, lounge club and cockteleria (using the Spanish word) is a wonderful, eclectic visual delight. And the drinks are great too! We literally dived into this lounge bar in the late afternoon on our first day in Barcelona (I'm afraid to say whilst I was in search of a lavatory again) and were so taken with it we kept going back. We were greeted by a member of staff and shown to a seat which was novel and rather special. We ... ...the surroundings. There is so much to catch the eye you're not sure where to turn first, it is a visual feast, and because of the excellent environment, even more so than the drink, this bar really stands out.
The outside of the building (located in the Gothic quarter) is fairly non-descript and you could walk past the grey exterior and dark windows without even realising it's a bar. When you stop to get a better look you can see a huge Buddha sitting ...

avoid
Advantages: none Disadvantages: overpriced, not family friendly and overcharging
Overpriced, average food and rude waiters
The food was really not that good, many places in Barcelona that can give you a better meal for a cheaper price. Avoid the meat, not good quality
In addition, the waiters were rude as they did not like the fact we had a baby and a pushchair and they overcharge our bill. As soon as they notice we were checking the bill, they came over to ensure everything was ok. They overcharge us for a lot of money (25%) ...

You don't HAVE to love raw fish - but it helps
Advantages: Fantastic food, subtle service, great ambiance Disadvantages: So understated that it's easy to miss
...a bit un-nerving picking a restaurant in a foreign city even if it's only for a couple of people. When you need three restaurants on three successive nights and want them to satisfy a very mixed group of people (12 to 36 of them depending on the night) then it's natural to be a bit worried because no restaurant is ever going to please them all. I just accept before I even start that someone will hate whatever I pick but if I'm paying, they can lump ... ...a time when no Barcelona restaurant is ready for action.
Understated or just plain hiding?
We were dropped directly outside the restaurant - or to be more precise, dropped at the restaurant's address where, despite standing right outside, we still couldn't find the place. To say that Negro is understated is - predictably- an understatement. There's no big sign, no colourful frontage, just a big metal door. From the outside, it could have ...

Thank Cod for La Bodega
Advantages: Fabulous food - plenty of things you don't find every day Disadvantages: It's not somewhere you could afford to go too often.
...The restaurant they chose was La Bodega on Plaza Molina in the Sant Gervasi area of the city. This district lies to the north of the Diagonal so not really in a typical tourist area. The Sant Gervasi metro stop is across the square from the restaurant so if you like what you read, it shouldn't be too hard to find it but keep in mind that this place is fiercely popular and you will probably need to make a booking. If you're travelling with a car, ... ...softness for romantic encounters in La Bodega.
We settled at our table, had a good nosey around and the owner popped back to be charming, something that didn't seem to be a challenge for him. We really were made to feel like four of his nieces popping in for dinner and he was irrepressibly jolly. We ordered cava to sip on whilst we looked at the menus which are apparently available in 17 different languages. I could have tried to work out WHICH ...

Encouraging Anima
Advantages: Wonderful food, scenery and ambience in Barcelona Disadvantages: More prawns!
Its very easy to find somewhere to eat in central Barcelona, there are countless tapas bars, falafel outlets, international eateries and very posh looking restaurants, but having said that one night during our recent stay we wanted something a bit different. We asked our hotel reception staff to recommend somewhere romantic but Spanish to help us celebrate our honeymoon. They suggested Ānima.
Situated in the Raval district, which is on the ... ...Ānima is based a little bit away from the usual tourist beaten track. We found we usually tended to wander round the Gothic quarter for bars and restaurants so it was somewhere new for us to explore. Our hotel was based on c/ de pelai so we decided to go from there but there is an easier route detailed below.
Going from there meant it was bit further to walk to but gave us the advantage of exploring this entirely different district. With trusty ...
