Park Guell sits above Barcelona, on the ‘Bald Mountain’ , the Muntayna Pelada. If you manage to pick the right Metro station and follow the not too clear road signs, you might even find yourself on the right street headed up the hill, the one furnished with escalators, that magically stop and start as you step on and step off (my first visit, I got lost and ended up slogging up that hill on foot, carrying all the bags like a pack horse, whilst my red-haired freckled friend wilted in the August heat). Another off Guell’s fantastic creations, he built a small wonderland perched above the city. The escalators take you almost all the way to the highest point of the park, following a spiraling stone lined path, to a plateau set with crosses. Standing here gives you a panoramic view across the city and down into the harbour. Walking down into the park takes you through intriguingly landscaped areas. Columns of lava-like rock support the terraces. Undulating mosaic seats, fringe the top of the beautiful white mosaic vaulted market place, a waterfall emerges from a lizards head, running down through other fantastical creatures, stairs flanking either side lead down to the main entrance, down to the gatehouses, built in true Gaudi gingerbread style. One of which is a souvenir shop, furnished with all things bright and Gaudi, and near by are the toilets – manned a ferocious woman, who, in some system I haven’t quite twigged, demands money both on the way in and on the way out. Saunter back down, and amuse yourself watching the mugs climbing laboriously up the hill, who haven’t twigged there are escalators a few streets away. Now where did you leave that Metro station?
