Spent a week in Barcelona about 2 years ago. Loved the place. So easy to get around, underground is great, like a second city under the pavement.
The little buses (red and blue routes) are really good value, I recommend. Places to see are all on the Red and Blue routes and I would say you should buy the 2 day tickets and do 1 route each day.
I stayed in the street next to La Ramblas, where the shops are and would recommend it. Good access to La Ramblas (without the highest prices), a little quieter and also good for the Bari Gotic.
Get the metro down to the beach and visit the marina area where the Olympic village used to be.
Although I didn't actually go up there, I believe the views are really good from up Columbus' Colon !!!!
I would recommend Guell Park, its really pretty and interesting. Of course you can't get away from the fact that Gaudi was from Barcelona so don't even try, just go with it.
I'm not really a shopper but there seemed to be plenty to buy. I bought a ceramic clock whilst there and am very pleased with it.
