The Barfly is open every night from 7 pm till 12, and from Fridays-Saturdays until 2 am. They have bands playing every night, which are always indie and very often local "talent" (Not my idea of talent but there you go!)
On Friday and Saturday nights there is an "Indie Disco" called *Fever*. I have never been but my flat mates love it.

When you go in, the club is down a steep set of stairs. You have to get your hand stamped before you go in, and it takes days to come off!
The club is really nothing more than a darkened basement room. Maybe it's just me, being from a big city, but I expect a bit more than that from a club, even if it is a venue for bands rather than trend central.
There is one bar, with two bar staff (who incidentally, always seem to ignore me!). There's a small raised stage at one end of the room where bands perform, with most of the floor used as dance floor/audience area. At the opposite end to the stage are a few booths with seats and tables. It is very dark down that end and often used by snoggers. So be warned!
The lighting system in the barfly seems to consist of an old bloke turning the lights on and off in time to the music. The joys of technology eh? Similarly, the sound system, while very loud, is not really all that and a bag of chips.
The cheapest drink are bottles of a dubious mixture called Vodka Ice, at £1.50 a bottle. It's basically a cheap rip off of Smirnoff Ice, which tastes like alcoholic syrup (not nice). After a few of those I felt a bit worse for wear (not drunk I assure you, just ill). The smoke and heat in the room didn't help. There was no ventilation whatsoever, and I really couldn't breathe.
I found the people quite annoying, the type that shove you out of the way and stand in front of you when you are trying to watch a band. As I'm only little I can't see over peoples' heads'!
So in conclusion, I would say the Barfly is expensive, smoky and very HOT. I suppose the music depends on what night you go on and what bands are playing, but I for one won't be going back.
If you really like indie music and are into that scene, and take your own oxygen mask then you might like it! I just think they are ripping off students. But then it is your own choice to go there. Each to his own. It's definitely not my style as far as clubbing goes.
Oh yeah, they have a web site too..it's at www.barflyclub.com
Advantages: Good live bands Disadvantages: Sometimes too smokey because of not much ventilation
The Barfly is one of the newest clubs in Cardiff. It's situated opposite Cardiff Castle and i have to admit that i'm a big fan of it. Barfly plays indie music and is a good alternative to the infamous Clwb Ifor Bach that i'm not too impressed with. Prices vary on the door depending on how well known a band is, local bands choose the prices they want to charge so beware! The most i've paid to get in is £7 which was for the Crocketts who i rate as ... ...occupied by snoggers. Barfly is basically a basement and not a very large one but the atmosphere makes up for it, although after the smoke machines been used a few times you can't see the other side of the room and sometimes it can get hard to breathe. Drink prices vary with special offers but because on Friday and Saturday Metroes and Clwb Ifor is still very popular prices are very reasonable after 11pm to attract more customers. At the moment there's ...

Advantages: Good Atmosphere, Cheap Disadvantages: Small / Crowded
The Barfly is one of Cardiff's few rock clubs.
It is situated to the right of Cardiff Castle. And just on the end of Queens Street.
It is a relatively small venue.
To gain access to the club once you have gone through the door you have got to make your way downstairs to the actually club.
Downstairs you have got cloakroom facilties, a bar, dance floor, stage and toilets.
The Cloakroom
The cloakroom costs £1 per item.
The Bar
There is a resonable ... ...to please everyone in the room.
They sell Beer, Larger, Alcopops, spirits, softdrinks and fruit juices and all at reasonable prices.
The also generally tend to have a promotion on some form of drink. Ususally it is bottles of carlsberg for £1, which is not too bad.
Dance Floor
The dance floor / social area is not as big as other clubs, it can get to be a bit of a tight squeese if it is a busy night. It is bascially all standing however, there ...

Advantages: Good music, live bands, in town centre Disadvantages: only for those into indie
...but i have to say Barfly remains at the top of my list!
The location: Barlfy is in the centre of town but you do have to go around the corner by pizza hut or you'll miss it!
The prices: this varies from whether its a disco night or a band night but its usually around £5 on a saturday night (live band than a disco) and the price to see bands varies on thier status. And some midweek nights are free.
The music: Different nights for different music ... ...Most people to attend barfly are generally likeminded and the atmospere is pleasent as well as the fashion! its hot indie guys and rock chicks everywhere!
The barfly is rather small and does have a bit of a basement like quality to it but it all adds to its charm but then again the toilets could do with a referb! The bar is usually well staffed and drinks are reasonably priced.
The venue does see some well known bands but its mostly newer bands ...

Advantages: clean, safe, things to do, relatively inexpensive Disadvantages: not a patch on my dear beloved London
currently going through as attempts to turn itself from industry to trendyness. The centre is a good place to pick up leaflets for nearby tourist attractions too.
Culture
This is where Cardiff really disappoints me. I guess it comes from spending too much time in London, and to be honest I long to be back there. There are galleries, there is an Arts Centre, there are music venues but there are always ?but?s. It?s just not the variety or the level I?m used to. I can see any small band I want to at the Barflyclub but they just don?t come back on their next tour and I don?t hold out much hope of the bands I like playing the International Arena. Both the Union and the Coal exchange are grossly underused. I can see two or three different exhibitions a month but most of that will be small local art, unless you want to keep going over ...
Advantages: A growing capital city, a good size. Disadvantages: Nowhere to visit.
!) Unless you actually like talking to these people, learn to say a swift "No thanks!"
My favourite shop in Cardiff is Blue Banana, which is located on Chippy Lane. So called because it has loads of chippies, believe it or not! Blue Banana sell jewellery, incense, bedroom accessories and T Shirts. It's the only place I have found that sells decent nose studs so I can be found traipsing there every few weeks (because I always, without fail, lose my nose studs. My record must have been about 2 weeks without losing one!)They also do piercing in there, of all varieties (not for the timid then!)
There are loads of pubs, clubs and restaurants, something for everyone, from cheap student nights at the tacky Zeus or Dylans, to garage nights at Vision 2K, to indie at the Barfly (read my opinion on that if you want!) to Drum n Bass at Evolution ...
