Addis Ababa as a travel destination

Advantages: Not touristy, inexpensive, interesting history, safe
Disadvantages: Poverty

If you are interested in a totally different experience, why not Ethiopia? We went to Ethiopia because it is an unusual destination, not many tourists, and has some unique history. When we arrived in Addis Ababa I got the shakes from the altitude (over 2,000 metres) but soon acclimatised. The altitude gives the capital city a very mild climate. The hotel we stayed in was called the Gedera and was surprisingly comfortable for the $15US a night we paid. The room was tidy with hot water and cable tv, and breakfast was included. Staff were friendly and helpful. There are a number of other hotels in the same price range, but if you want to spend more then you could stay at the lushous Sheraton Hotel. But the hotel looks like an oasis of luxury surrounded by the poverty of shanty towns. Its easy to get around Addis Abeba. We had a taxi ...

A cracking debut album by Baroness

Advantages: Intelligent compositions, some catchiness retained
Disadvantages: Will not appeal to all

After releasing several EP's, Baroness released their debut album in 2007 and it immediately won over numerous critics with the magazine Revolver even going as far as claiming it was the best album of 2007. While, I wouldn't go that far - it is certainly a good album and a little bit different. Baroness hail from Savannah in Georgia and like so many of their fellow contemporaries from that area, tend to play sludge metal - unlike the majority of bands who like to keep the traditional deep south sludge metal sound throughout, these guys mix it up with haunted and sometimes ethnic sounding progressive music - which is usually simplistic yet highly effective. Tracks like Teeth of A Cogwheel, Isak and Wanderlust have to be given a mention as they change speed seemlessly and rock a long at a comfortable sludge metal speed, more ambitious ...

Review of Red Album - Baroness

Baros Island - Maldives

Advantages: This is my favourite Island so Far
Disadvantages: None what so ever

Baros is a small island in the North Male atoll. about 40 mins boat transfer from the Airport. Well this was the very first Island we stayed on back in 1993, we revisited again in Dec '02,. Since then it has been completely refurbished, all new bungalows each with steps up to a terrace outside each room, all rooms only a few steps from the waters edge. Beautiful gardens with scented flowers all round the island. New bars and restaurants that are excellent, the coffee shop extends onto the terrace over the beach, where you watch the sun go down. The service was very good as was the food. The island has a sea wall that shelters one side of the island from the sea, this is great for snorkelling if you are not too confident in the water, but just outside the sea wall is the house reef for the more experienced. As with all ...
