Barry Island Is on the change

Advantages: Great day out if the weather is good
Disadvantages: Some of the Pleasure Park rides are showing there age

...I took our children to Barry Island for a day out during the summer holidays. We live in Newport, which is about a 30 Minute car journey from Barry Island.

THE LOCATION
------------------------

Barry Island is located on the South East Coastline of Wales, in the Vale of Glamorgan. It has always been an attractive location for people from South Wales, The Vale of Glamorgan, and the South Wales Valleys to visit ...
...OF BARRY ISLAND
-----------------------------------------------------
Barry Island Promenade was first connected to the mainland and Barry by the Switchback Railway, which was built up to the west end of the promenade in 1897. Prior to this visitors had to be Ferried via Paddle Steamers to and from the Island to visit the pleasure resort with Promenade in the late 1880`s when the promenade was first built as a pleasure resort.

Barry Island and Barry.

Advantages: Lots to do.
Disadvantages: The weather.

...discovering a ciao category for Barry Island, (Ynys Y Barri), I decided that I had to write a review. Obviously this is a big task and I have done my best to include everything. Barry Island used to be home to a large Butlin's Holiday Park. I am sure some of you visited there, but earlier this year the site was demolished, somewhat emotionally, and a tourist research centre is to be built in its place. This was a very sad occasion and the end of ...
...been closed for several years, Barry Island and Barry still have an enormous amount to offer tourists and residents alike. Barry Island and Barry, the adjoining town, began as farms. Well over a hundred years ago the Docks were built in Barry and the town quickly grew on the back of the coal trade; in 1913 over 11 million tons of coal was exported from Barry Docks. No other Dock in the United Kingdom or Ireland have ever beating this record and ...

A Childhood Holiday Destination Now Tarnished

Advantages: not many these days, used to be great
Disadvantages: dull, drab, tacky

...to Butlin's holiday camp in Barry Island every year for about five years with my parents, and it was brilliant, I loved every minute of it. The camp was excellent with great sports facilities, cinema, entertainment, fairground rides, everything you could need for a good time. We only left the camp a couple of times to have a look round Barry itself and visit the excellent fair there, look round the shops and so on. Since Butlin's closed there, I ...

A Traditional Holiday

Advantages: great fun, lots to do and see
Disadvantages: very expensive these days

I used to go to Butlin's regularly as a child, because we lived near the Skegness one and my Dad used to love going there. I went to Butlin's every year for a long time, but the ones I really remember were in the 1980s, when we used to go to the camp at Barry Island in Wales. The chalets were basic, but not unpleasant and we hardly spent any time in them anyway. There were great facilities, everything you could want on the site. There were organised competitions, discos, nightclubs, good quality entertainment, free cinema, swimming pool, etc. I used to take the National Pentathlete Awards each year, which meant you automatically had a program of sporting activities to attend, and had an instant bond with a group of strangers who would soon become your friends over the week. We still keep in touch with some of the people we met ...

Review of Butlins

A Beautiful Corner Of The Planet

Advantages: lots of different places to visit, too much to detail here
Disadvantages: some places aren't as good as ever

Wales is on one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. No, I am not Welsh, I am English, so my judgement is not clouded by a bizarre nationalism. I have been to many different parts of Wales over the years and, like anywhere, there are good and bad areas, but overall, Wales is beautiful and well worth a visit. When I was a child, we used to go on holiday to Barry Island in South Wales each Summer. It seemed a magical place to me and I still have very many happy memories of my time spent there. But when I went back there a few years ago, it had changed and was rather tacky and very cheap looking. So I wouldn't recommend a trip there these days, unless you are a big fan of places like Skegness. I'm a Lincolnshire lass, so I'm allowed to criticise Skeggy! We go to Cardiff quite often, as it is only a hour and a half's drive ...
