Advantages: Beautiful Disadvantages: Can't think of any
Yes, another Venice review...Probably my last one though...
Okay...Saint Mark's Basilica (Basilicadi San Marco) was built in 1071, and is in Venice, at St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco).
The square can be hard to find, or very easy, depending on how good you are at navigating the streets (needless to say, we had a bit of a struggle!) Even though the basilica is enormous, I couldn't see it at all until we stumbled straight onto St Mark's Square, where it suddenly leaps out on you, dominating the place. If ever you go to Venice I would strongly recommend a trip to St Marks Square, as this building is probably one of the most amazing you will ever see.
The thing that struck me first of all was the sheer colossal size of it. It is toweringly tall, and extemely wide, I have never seen anything like it. I was expecting to see ...
the buses do get full and can resemble rush hour on the tube.
There is a train line which also resembles the tube with the amount of graffiti on it and is a 300metre walk from Tasso. We stayed away from it so cannot comment on the quality.
Taxis are numerous but can be expensive because of the traffic as the meter keeps moving even when you are not. For the ultimate tourist experience there are horse drawn carriages that leave from Tasso for a quick tour.
Local tours can be organized from the tourist office which is located in the centre of town.
Accommodation
Hotels and camp sites abound in Sorrento and there is something for every budget. We stayed in a hotel just outside of the main town in Sant Agnello (see review Hotel Grand Parco del Sole) One point to consider when booking a hotel is the traffic noise in and around ...
Advantages: Interesting town, great weather, good base to explore the area Disadvantages: Traffic and pollution
a lot of pollution, both of the noise and fume varieties. If you have any breathing difficulty, or are a light sleeper (or want to use your balcony!) make sure your hotel is away from the centre of town. The hotels closer to the sea seem the quietest, and the views over the 2 marinas are stunning by day and night. On my next visit I will be trying for a hotel on the Via Capo, overlooking Marina Grande, where I won?t be wakened by traffic fumes every morning.
OUT AND ABOUT
If architecture and history is of interest to you, Sorrento leaves you spoiled for choice. Being a catholic country, it has many old churches, most notable of which is a 15th century cathedral. There is also the Basilica of St. Antonino, which has it?s origins in the 11th century. If that isn?t early enough for you, part of the original walls of the town ...
