Admittedly I am a biased history student but I found this place absolutely magical. The first 20 mins of my video from a 3 week tour of Europe, are taken up by the tombs of St. Denis. I was very disappointed to discover that the tombs no longer held the bodies of those they represented as they were thrown out during the Revolution. The place is a little out of the way, but it really is worth the extra time spent getting there. It is not in the nicest part of town either but you don't go there to see the area, you go to see this ancient monument and all it houses. As Westminster Abbey is my favourite place in the world (no not joking!) I was interested to see what the French royal mausoleum would be like and I was not disappointed. There are far more royal tombs here than in Westminster Abbey. The number is incredible. There is the added bonus that you can film and take photos inside the church which would not be allowed in this country. There is also the fascination of being able to see Louis XVIII's heart - a little gruesome but very interesting. For anyone interested in French history or just anyone who likes design and architecture this is a must.
