The completely modernised Bastion Deluxe Hotel Almere is perfect for guests who appreciate a personal atmosphere, hospitality, comfort, good facilities and a hotel that is reasonably priced.
Advantages: Comfortable airy rooms, good food, reasonably priced beer & cheap international telephone calls Disadvantages: Bad location, stuffy staff
...The Bastion Amstel DeluxeHotel was the final leg of an exhausting journey around the Netherlands visiting a range of Universities, and was to be our final stop for two nights before the onward journey with the KLM “I believe I am a racing driver” Pilots.
Bastion is a Dutch chain which currently has 28 hotels across the Netherlands and one in Germany.
Arrival at the hotel quickly established that we were in the middle of nowhere, save for a petrol station next door, situated on a business site with an apparent direct metro connection to Centraal Station close by (actually about 15 minutes walk).
CHECK-IN
Nightmare – 16 people all arriving in one go – reception refused to check for individual names but insisted that we would all crowd around and wait for our names to be called out – not a service you would expect from a 4* deluxehotel...

Advantages: Great food, great hotels Disadvantages: For some the red light district
...hours on the ferry. It’s also possible to go to Dover and then via France to Amsterdam but this is also more expensive than Easy Jet.
Where to stay
***********
I always stay with my mum or with friends when I visit Amsterdam; however there have been a few occasions when I have stayed in a hotel.
My pick of the Hotels:
5* Hotel- CROWNE PLAZA THE AMERICAN. It is situated at the famous Leidse Square in the heart of Amsterdam and was built at the beginning of the 1900’s. It is right next to a canal and has its own boat landing area. The Café & Brasserie American, are also a part of the Hotel where you can go to eat even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, the food is amazing as is the service. Dress up for the occasion.
The price of a double room (standard room) is 180 Euros, a deluxe room called the king junior would put you back 423 Euros...

Advantages: Quiet rooms with great airconditioning. Disadvantages: Business atmosphere with arrogant reception.
...Frenzied searching on the internet for a last minute hotel in Amsterdam I was excited to find this hotel offering exclusive luxery at an irresistable price. Following a long drive from Hamburg (we are touring the hot spots of Europe), and a further 2 hours stuck in busy city traffic we arrived at the hotel reception. We were met with the response 'sorry you are not booked in and we have no rooms availabe'. Much embarrasing debate later we were found on the system and given our keys, (but no apology)!
Our room (double delux) was tastefully decorated with fantasic views over the city from a huge window. Equipped with fax, internet access, robe, slippers,tv, telephone, tin of mints, usual toiletries, a reasonably priced mini bar and a trouser press. We did not have tea and coffee making facilities or an iron.
We decided to eat in the hotels...

Having visited Amsterdam several times we chose the Agora by it's locality - being on the Singel Canal and close by the Spui and Flowermarket. We were happily not disappointed in our choice. We stayed for 3-nights , and, having arrived on an early am... more
