Advantages: Relaxing morning with no kids Disadvantages: Expensive
...the morning in the new Thermae Spa.
Bath thermae spa was, I believe, originally Bath's millennium project, but came in massively over budget and behind schedule. However the city of Bath, originally named Aqua Sulis by the Celts as it has the only hot spring in England, has long been famed for the healing properties of its hot spring, but this has not been open to the public since Roman times. Getting there
The Spa itself is situated very close ... ...you are unfamiliar with Bath the easiest option to travel into the centre is using one of the 3 park and rides, as parking within reach is at a premium and if you are going to be spending a relaxing few hours you don't want to be worrying about your parking ticket.
The Spa
Now the busiest time to visit the spa is from mid morning over the weekend, so we thought we would try and get there as it opened. As we live an hours drive away and it was the ...
Advantages: 50m means lots of pool space. Disadvantages: Small female changing rooms and limited spectator seating for large competitions
...hot and not too cold. Bath is not one of the most accessible cities although the pool is only a 10 min bus ride from Bath train station. However, there are some negative aspects to it - one being that there is not a large amount of seating in the spectator galleries so hosting big competitions here would be a problem. Also the girls changing rooms were very small considering how large the pool facility is. Again, not good for either the public or ... ...it is a University of Bath facility means the public cannot train at certain times (although this is the case with most pools that share the facilities between the public and sports clubs). Overall I would say that it is an excellent facility for that of a small university city. ...
Advantages: lots to see, street markets, food markets, great value for money. Disadvantages: they need to invest in developing the place, it needs it.
...to oxford, bath & weston-super-mare.
the most intresting one was the trip to bath. we arrived at 09:00 and had the all day to toure the place. the city itself is a small version of an old roman city (it WAS a roman city) in witch the main attraction is the old roman baths (not the only attraction).
the whole city is built on a mountain and so you'll probably have more fun driving there with a 4x4 (i took my toyota land cruiser and felt like a king). ... ...i think it changes by the season. you get a talking device that explains the history of the place as you go inside and lets you stop and look (and hear) about the different intresting points along the way.
we didn't use the device as there is so much to see even without it (we were there for about an hour and a half) and we didn't stop for long.
the only thing i was thinking to myself is : why aren't the managers change and clean the water so that ...
Advantages: Beautiful Gardens Disadvantages: Now closed for good
I live about an hours drive from Bath and had visited the bird gardens on many occasions. They were closed in 2001 and I hope I have saved any potential day-trippers a wasted journey.
When open the tropical bird gardens were the ideal place for everyone to visit regardless of age. The woodlands and gardens were adapted for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Many local schools used the premises to teach children all about nature and wildlife. There ... ...public to enjoy. These were clearly posted on a board as you entered. You could also purchase a small booklet and map of the park.
The gardens were full of hundreds of exotic, tropical and very colourful birds. Many of these would fly freely amongst the grounds and some were so tame they would land on you. All of the aviaries were outside and easily accessible. They had been specially designed to blend in with their natural surroundings. A large ...
